Description Back in the days, grain - wheat in particular - was treated with chemicals so make the straws shorter. The longer the straw, the more prone the grain is to get knocked over by harsh weather. The knocked over grain is usually lost, as the kernels have tendency to spire, and even if the damage happened prior to harvest, leaving the kernels no time to spire, the harvesters have a hard time picking it up. The chemical straw shortener (I have no idea what it's actually called in English) was banned decades ago, so the straws grow to full length now.
