Description
The moon held high in the sky as the midnight hours drew near. The days were long as it came close to late December and the frosty winds still lingered in the land. Gripping her cloak tightly around her, a young girl about thirteen years of age, walked silently through the forest. Fear took over the girl as she heard the snapping of twigs nearby. Her mind was screaming at her to run, but her legs were frozen stiff. She watched as the bushes in front of her started to move. Her heart began to beat faster and faster as the rustling of the brush continued. Seconds felt like years, and all the girl could do in her frozen state was watch and wait for the creature to come out.
Relief washed over her when she saw a snow-white rabbit make its way across the path. She sighed before continuing her journey through the lonesome woods. Her blonde hair bounced playfully with each step she took and shimmered like crystals under the pale light of the new moon. She suddenly had the feeling as though she were being watched. The small girl looked quickly around, but saw nothing except the plant-life that consumed the forest floor.
'It was probably just my imagination… I'm not far from home now,' thought the girl before continuing once again.
A creature hidden in the shadows watched from its perch as the blonde girl made her way towards the edge of the forest. Angered that this mere human girl had dared to venture into its forest, the creature prepared its descent. Though just before it jumped, another figure made himself known. A second human, this time a man, stepped out from his hiding place. The creature froze and watched curiously as the man began to follow the girl. It smiled wickedly and decided to wait awhile longer, after all, two was better than one…
The girl was just about to reach the edge of the forest when she heard the crunching of leaves behind her. She turned in time to see the dark figure of a man suddenly charge at her. The girl took off running. She could hear the man come dangerously close behind her. The girl ran faster, but no matter how fast she ran, the man matched her pace. Too afraid to watch where she was going, the girl tripped over a fallen branch. Just as she fell, she heard the sinister laughter that sounded eerily familiar.
The young man started to laugh as he watched the girl fall clumsily ahead of him. As he approached her, he tried to keep a straight face as he stared down at his younger sister's angry expression. He couldn't help it, she looked ridiculous! He happened to be on his way to the village where she had been staying to help make more money. Since he was now the eldest, he took on their late father's job to protect the family from harm's way.
"James Matthew Roberts! That was an awful thing you have done!" His sister scolded.
"Alright, alright, calm yourself Lily. You yourself has done wrong as well. Mother, Joseph, Rose, and I have not heard word from you in over a fortnight," James said with concern flooding his voice.
"I do apologize, brother," Lily said keeping her head hung low.
They had already lost their father and two older siblings once before and the family had never been the same since. The fact that Lily lived so far away, only made James worry even more. After a long silence, he let out a sigh.
"Come, you are forgiven. Let us finish the journey home together, we're not but a half-mile away now," James said holding out his hand to help her off the ground.
However, instead of taking his hand, his sister stared wide-eyed behind him and let out a haunting scream. Before James had time to react to his sister's horror, he felt an agonizing pain strike him, and just as soon as it came it was gone. He couldn't think and he couldn't feel any emotions; absolutely nothing except for the bone-chilling blackness that had surrounded his soul.
Just as Lily raised her head, she saw a terrifying sight. A creature black as night loomed over her brother. Its eyes were red like blood and teeth like daggers gleamed under the moonlight. She screamed her brother's name hoping he would turn and run from the monster's claw as it wavered above his head. It was too late, the monster slashed furiously at the back of James' neck, killing him instantly.
After killing the man, the creature chuckled at the sight of the girl's tortured face. It paused awhile longer before closing in for the kill. The girl's final scream rang through the night, sending even the slightest chills to all who happened to hear it.
