I have a question..
How do you do the sketch under that? Do you sketch it really light
before darkening what you're officially keeping and shading?
Or do you just do it all without sketching?

Yes, I start sketcing the drawing lightly and then I darken what I want to keep.
But usually when I start, I draw the outline of the face darker than anything else and sketch the other parts lightly, then darken.
