This man is very unique. In his village and surroundings he has been known as a man of great strenght. Strong as a bull, he could lift a cow with his bare hands. In the war, he wore this peasants' baking bowl as a helmet.

-------->I rarely, hardly ever, use flash because, in my opinion, it ruins the atmopshere. But here I had to use it because of too dark shadows from the sun that covered his eyes, and eyes are very important in this photo....

da,to su mog tadašnjeg novinara s kim sam radila 3 god sve ove priče o selima i ljudima zvali s tv-a kad su u Areni vidili priču o njemu, di živi da bi i oni o njemu napravili priču,zaista je nevjerojatan,i kao stariji čovik je ostao ljudina,mrga,a kako mu je peka ostala na glavi,eh to je tehnika koja je samo njemu jasna.čini mi se

I had a couple Swedish uncles like this, one's claim to strength was lifting a rather large oldsmobile v8 out of it's respected car with his bare hands. Men of great strength like this, i dunno, they just make me think of how much I wish I could possess their features in that manner.

pa je,ovo je terenski posao moram se nekad prilagodit situaciji i upotrijebit način koji mi inače i nije drag ako želim da bude šta od slije,,,,,no meni je sjelo,taj blic mi je ovdje pridonjeo tom nekoj hard-core štihu koji mi je bitan za ovu sliku,nije ovo sofisticirana šminkerska slika

I can see why.
I've spoken with Nachtwey this past September and he mentioned how flash introduces an unnatural element into your environment, therefor manipulating it into something fake. The flash didn't exist until the photographer used it. It's not part of the location and therefor making it photojournalism by a far stretch.
Good thing this isn't photojournalism, then.

If you have looked at my previous photos you would see I don't use flash. I don't like flash, and everyone who knows my work know that. This photo is an exception. If you ever worked on photo-stories(reportage) you know that there are some conditions in the filed when you have to adjust to situation and you have no choice. As using flashlight in this photo. Nachtwey is a model to many photo-reporters, but you should not listen to or obey anyone blindly, but develop your own style!

....are they like photoessays and features and other forms of reportage? Like...maybe for a newspaper or agency or magazine? I think I've done that once or twice.
You always have a choice, mate.
And the Nachtwey point was to address the dishonesty of using flash.

Yes, I did photoessays and other forms of reportage for 8 years. For dailypapers, magazines, and, among others, for Croatian edition of National Geographics.
