Description With 9 nieces and nephews I wanted to make them all something fun for Christmas this year... so, here is one of the two notebooks I made for them. it's taken from the bigger design I did for a project art book but scaled down for Journals. Cast in resin and mounted on the book covers of notebooks, hand painted faux finishes. I really hope they like them

I am your tenth niece! gimme one too! XD lol, kidding aside, this is such a great work! I don't have the materials for casting, so I envy you for doing something awesomely great like this..

Thanks, glad you like it you know, you can make your own casting materials, or use stuff around the house... silicone calking can be used to make molds, use Vaseline on your sculpt so it wont stick and put in the sun for a few days to cure right, then you can cast in it with plaster of paris. Simple, you can also do paper mache or even 5 minute epoxy from the store. that's like under 6 bucks for the mold and the casting plastic! see, no excuse

hm, yeah you're right. I think I'll try my luck with plaster of paris since I have some experience using it. (though not as good as you) Thanks for the advice! It really helped since I'm having problems on what I will do with the cover of my book. (it's my first time doing a book/notebook)

the Ancient Tome of Ammonite? Nice work!

hevic [2009-12-30 13:05:33 +0000 UTC]

how durable do you think they'd be? would the weight of them eventually cause the covers to be ripped off?
i'd love to make something similar, i just worry about how Uni-proof they'd be.
what resin did you use by teh way?
*bombards with questions*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to hevic [2009-12-31 18:03:38 +0000 UTC]

They are quite tough, as long as you lightly sand the resin and give it a coat of primer, the paint wont flake off and I use a sealer on top too, so they might get worn spots, they wont come apart

hevic In reply to TimBakerFX [2010-01-03 00:03:58 +0000 UTC]

they wont be too heavy for the books either? I worry they'll pull the covers off

TimBakerFX In reply to hevic [2010-01-08 05:56:52 +0000 UTC]

I've never had it happen, I use fabric for my inner binding sheets
