Description This is an example of the kinds of things that can be done with acid etching and cutting. I drew these in Illustrator, printed it on lith to contact print on 24" X 24" sheets of brass, stainless steel, and aluminum. These are all pieces for book covers i'm working on.

The same acid etching process can be used to form glass etching which is covered with wax or some sticky substance to preserve the natural cover of the glass. The glass is similarly dipped into hydrofluoric acid bath to make the etched image visible, this process is very dangerous and so a craft fanatic must choose a safer etching cream for home project.[link]

Yes, there are several commercially available products for glass etching. I've used several and they work very well. I wouldn't say it was very dangerous tho, just be mindful you are using acid and be careful, it's as easy as that.

Me too, I'm trying to get a complete setup for doing electric etching, then you just use salt water. I'll post links to a tutorial when i remember where I found it.

oh i've worked in worse, for 6 months my shop was the back of my truck that I was sleeping in when I first moved to LA... If I could do it you sure can with running water hehe

dragonladych In reply to TimBakerFX [2010-05-04 12:55:56 +0000 UTC]

Water yes, but I only have a small roof window in the kitchen. Not good.
I would have to transform the living room maybe, but then there wouldn't be running water nearby

acid etching sounds really interesting, how thick can the mental be?

also great work, I bet they'll look good on those book covers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to gryphonsshadow [2010-05-13 05:17:09 +0000 UTC]

You can etch on any thickness, but to cut, I think .06 inches is a good thickness

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

DFLY847 [2010-05-02 01:23:05 +0000 UTC]

Very cool! How thin can you get the lines without compromising the piece? And how thick are they? I love the designs!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to DFLY847 [2010-05-02 01:27:06 +0000 UTC]

you can get the lines very thin, since it's a photo process, these pieces I think are .06 inches thick, thick enough to be strong and function
