Description Because the spirits couldn't enter the human city, they created their own somewhere hidden in the forest. Inside, various creations of the many spirits dwell around. Every house is filled with furniture, spices, tools and everything you would find in a normal city, however, some rooms are adjusted by a spirit or in some houses the furniture has been adjusted. You can even find strange buildings amongst the other ones, which have been adjusted because a spirit considered it necessary.

This is the Pottery Gate, created by a spirit who has an obsession with ceramics and pottery. You can see three different lifeforms he created, somewhat based on human beings.
Furthermore the roots that grow on the entrance gate is a strange phenomena, for it only grows on the outer side of the gate and never spreads to any other building. Some say the roots are actually limbs of an organism, which is hidden inside the gate building.

-------------------------------------------

This drawing took hours and hours. The last drawing of this summer holiday (2012). I've done my best to make it as detailed as i could. I've written my name somewhere as a hidden detail (though I doubt if anyone will ever take the time to look for it), I've also made the city, which you can see through the gate as detailed as possible. I've placed some cracks in the walls and in all the ceramic stuff you can find on it.

It took a lot of time to make and I sincerely hope that you all like it.

Thx!
Well if you want to know more: These are just beings that one day woke up in an entirely empty city filled with absurdities. Of course, they don't know anything about the human world. Well actually, they don't know anything, some are gifted with thoughts, some are just empty-minded creatures that stroll around the city without a purpose. Some may explore areas that reach beyond the city walls, some will just constantly stay put (maybe because they don't have the ability to walk, like the torch-carrier on this image).
On the image you can see one of the characters is about to leave the city, therefor you could say he's developed some kind of curiosity to what lies beyond the fake city. Ceramic is pretty fragile though. Who's to say what might happen to him?

Hope that satisfies your curiosity. I would write stories about these characters if I had the ability to write it out decently.

Thanks, it does! I'm really sad to hear that you won't be writing any stories about the little clay guy or the other townsfolk, but the picture tells the story quite well on it's own! And you're welcome for the fave and watch. Love your stuff!

That's always nice to hear

I usually decide on the story after I've made the pictures. I like having a bit of background info to make it all come to life. As soon as I get a bit better at storyboards and stuff, I might make comics or something someday. But I haven't really pushed myself yet at learning how to do that decently. Too busy practicing other stuff xP

Yeah, it's still really hard for me to storyboard, etc.

Yeah, really nice.
And you're welcome of course.
I thought about a funny thing about out art vs. craft conversation.
As much as I'm a champion of "art" having to break new ground,
90% of my time is spent in a "craft" phase, fixing lines and that sort of thing.

I was actually inspired by your amazingly detailed "Hell World" drawing to make this one as detailed as I could.

About the discussion, I think people who are striving for innovation, every small bit of innovation they manage to get is an achievement. Technique is that something that can make the innovation you achieved more beautiful. The way you create your lines, patterns and organic shapes has a very unique thing to it. I think that at least 50% of that 90% you call the "craft" phase is something unique and therefor innovative.

I actually had a discussion with one of my best friends a while ago, who pretty much shares your view (even though he doesn't create visual art himself).
Even though I'm a big fan of both crafts and innovative arts, I always tried to come up with original designs and pretty much relied on those.

The moment where I feel like an artist, is the moment when I'm both impressed and proud of something I've made. Even though I'm not nearly as good as the many different amazing artists I've encountered here

Well I just think it's fascinating and cool,
that the mostly idea guy (you), Not saying you don't have skill but your ideas are uniquely fresh above and beyond others.
Is telling the mostly "craft" guy (me) about craft,
While the mostly craft guy (me) is telling the idea man about art.
I think we must be on some kind of good path for each other.
In my head, my art has to be unusual or erotic of at least interesting to me.
But the vast majority of time is spent on it being nicely rendered.
The fact that you mention my work in inspiring detail seems to complete the circle.

TimKb In reply to ThePlanetRodinia [2012-09-23 14:08:18 +0000 UTC]

Now that I think about it, it is! As if our definition of art is merely a reason to call each other's works art. I always considered my ideas to be the main thing that separates my work from others, So i definitely don't consider it an offense if you say my ideas are better than my technique (cause that's just how it is).
Even though your technique is very impressive and mine isn't even comparable to it (especially traditionally), the reason why I started watching you (a long while ago) was for the unique landscapes you always created filled with unique building/vehicle/creature and character design. That's still what inspires me the most from your drawings.

ThePlanetRodinia In reply to TimKb [2012-09-23 18:41:33 +0000 UTC]

Well I think technique can be improved over time.
I've been drawing for over 30 years and I still see many things I could do better.
But, original ideas are harder to come by. I've met so many people who have so much skill but don't know what they want to draw.
I think the open and wondering mind is the best tool an artist can have.
I guess that's why I'm biased toward ideas.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimKb In reply to ThePlanetRodinia [2012-09-23 21:00:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah ideas can be very hard to get. Sometimes I very much feel like drawing, but don't have any ideas (pretty typical). I could draw something generic like a random face or something, but that doesn't give me satisfaction. Even when I look at my concepts now I still feel like I'm always in the "me-category" when it comes to ideas. I hope to some day cross a border and think of stuff that no longer looks like a typical "me-concept", as much as I like having a certain identity hidden in my concepts. But I might as well stay there for ever, unless I base it on someone else's, but then it loses it's authentic feeling. It might be a bit strange, but I'm very interested in other artists because they could maybe push me over a border or help me create a bunch of new me-categories and that way help me become more diverse, merely by inspiring me. Though at the moment I'm mostly trying to get my technique right, I haven't experimented much with different styles yet, while it's definitely on my to-do list.

ThePlanetRodinia In reply to TimKb [2012-09-25 18:09:31 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think your "me category" still has a lot of uncharted territory to explore.
What I like about your concepts is that the often take a "left turn".
I'll think I know where you are going with something but the you surprise me.
Other styles are nice, but you'll have plenty of time for that.
I think just focusing on one can be rewarding too. I made a planet for mine.
It's not an immutable choice but some people are a jack of all trades, I'd rather be a master of one.
Instead of changing styles you can also branch out in art forms.
I play music and write but it all seems to fit into my "me category".

TimKb In reply to ThePlanetRodinia [2012-09-26 17:19:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you really shouldn't ever take steps away from your style. I'm aiming though at becoming a graphic designer. I'd definitely like to have multiple styles. I appreciate diversity in an artist. For example music-wise I like to listen to bands that try many different things/genres, for example Radiohead. Same with art, multiple styles, will help me get more diverse. Cartoon-ish styles will give a new insight on the shapes of the characters, while photo-realism helps with getting proportions and such right. Improving in other styles will help me improve my personal style as well. (I have said "style" quite a lot of times)It's not really aiming at becoming a jack of all trades, though I like taking good things from many different places.
I've always wished I could play an instrument, but I never got to it and at the moment I sadly do not have the time for it. Maybe one day I'll learn to play harmonica

ThePlanetRodinia In reply to TimKb [2012-09-27 06:01:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but as many "style" changes as Radiohead had,
They were always distinctly Radiohead.
Somehow I feel The Awaken may follow a similar path.

TimKb In reply to ThePlanetRodinia [2012-09-28 07:55:17 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! Drawings in different style genres will help me improve my own style.

The-awaken is actually a terrible nick in my opinion. Probably the one thing I regret doing here on deviantart xP. Back then my english was terrible, though I wouldn't leave this account, since it's got pretty much my history in it's gallery

Cool!

I think the Awaken is a great name!
It's a verb and title and describes what you do perfectly.
The Awaken could totally exist in your world.

I'm glad you like it. I always felt that it made no sense at all. Grammatically it was just wrong. I felt like it needed to be the-awakened instead xP.

Yeah, I know you've said it was an accident, but I think The Awakened or The Awakening would be quickly dismissed, while the Awaken make your brain go ??? for just a second.

Traditionally I always translated my concepts into rough sketchy drawings, simply because I wasn't able to do it any other way. You've proofed with your work, that you can mix different materials, and paint with acrylics very precisely. That's definitely a few steps ahead of me
