Description Welcome To the Mansion Hotel Lobby. If you wish to book a room our robotic personnel would be most pleased to assist you. Both Edgar and Mary are programmed to aid you with whatever your needs may be.
Our Hotel features authentic Victorian architecture combined with modern Art Deco and Nouveau elements. Every room is unique and is constantly treated as one, that's why there is no consistent numeration for the rooms and you could find, for example, a room like 345 directly next to room 353.
The architect tried to define a specific personality for each individual room and felt that many room numbers did not reflect their room's character, when every room was still given a consistent number. So he either counted upwards until he found a number that pleased him or he just blatantly chose a number that fitted for him.
Note that some rooms are more "unique" than others, so it's worth revisiting our hotel to try a different one!

Enjoy your stay!

-------------------------------------

Partly because of my severe lack of any writing skills and my not so perfect English, this description took some time to come up with and I'm not yet pleased with it as it is (suggestions are always welcome).
I once again tried to do something completely different from what i usually draw. If you take a look at my gallery, you will quickly discover my unimaginably large amount of drawings of human beings (definitely not sarcastic here (DEFINITELY!)).
I also usually draw forests or medieval houses in my background environment and I felt like trying something different for a change.
So I chose to draw a hotel lobby in a sixties setting with robotic personnel and a whole bunch of references to stuff I like, know about, or are simply interested in. To find those references you're going to have to do some zooming .

Anyway, this took ages to finish and of course I wouldn't submit it, if I wasn't pleased with it.
So let me know what you think about it!

Thank you!
At first I tried not to make her creepy as much as I could. But that made the design lose some of her charm. So I'm glad you like that!

Thanks for the fave also!

Yup! At first I wanted to push it in a 1930 "Metropolis" (Fritz Lang) kind of setting. But later on I felt that the fifties or sixties would be much more fitting.

The lighting is really nice in this one.
A cool kind of homey yet creepy feeling.
The robots look like very honest helpful folks, it make you want to ignore their unusual appearance.
I think I would often be nervous in you're world, but I would have the sense that it's all going to work out to guide me.

Thanks

Yeah I like keeping some sort of dark side in my world. It's like when I was a kid who believed in fairy-tales, witches and ghosts. It's the fear for the unknown that keeps the magic alive.

Every coin needs two sides, otherwise it wouldn't be valuable. Same with fantasy worlds. You can have sanity for all it's logic and serenity, but it wouldn't be perceivable without madness and the chaos it brings. In my fantasy world, for the sake of escapism, I like adding more madness than sanity. Sanity is just one big reference to our almost predictable lives, as they are. While madness is the unusual and unexpected.

It's this madness that probably adds this dark twist to my world and would probably be a reason why it could be perceived as something that would make you nervous.
The border between being nervous and being excited is pretty thin though.

Yeah, The movie Wizard of Oz gave me the creeps so bad when I was a little kid, but it's one of my all time favorite movies.
Everything was so happy and bright and cheerful but I guess there was a kind of madness hanging over the whole thing. Even the scarecrow freaked me out when she first met him. A lot of your work gives me that Oz feeling.
It's the way my dreams can often be, there might be some horrible menace in the room but everyone seems to accept it for some reason. I think embracing the darkness is quite healthy. There are just dark parts of your mind that you may never fully understand.
I think people who try to smooth everything over with distractions are not getting the full version of the experience of being a conscious entity.

Yeah, I had a comparable experience with some of the tales of Grimm. (I have read Oz though a while ago. My favourite character is the Tin Man) Those tales of witches that could be wandering anywhere, magical creatures that could be wandering through the same woods as I am. It's that naivety that made everything so real and magical. As romanticist I consider that one of the most beautiful things a person can experience. It's a shame that the human society pretty much punishes you for being naif. People will mislead you with everything in their power as long as they can gain something from it. Religions and sects are some of the prime examples. (The higher ups who mislead the lower class, Like the crusades, Relic-market, ...)
This is why most adults in this modern society can't experience magic like they could before. While say in the Medieval days, people didn't have that modern rationality and cynicism that prevents you from being mislead.
We've turned something so beautiful into a double-edged sword.

I fully agree, whenever my daughter gets scared of some creepy internet thing I always tell
to enjoy being scared, because when it's gone, you can't get it back.
I never get that creepy monster feeling much anymore, when I was a kid, I never thought I would
miss it, but now I do.

I think humanity needs some kind of middle ground, where we're not sacrificing people so the sun will rise, but also not boiled our life experience down to mudane scientific explanations only.

TimKb In reply to ThePlanetRodinia [2013-05-29 17:55:12 +0000 UTC]

Couldn't agree more! As much as I like rational thoughts and what they have to offer there are just some beautiful experiences that can't be rationalized or would be destroyed if they were rationalized. If everything was mundane science there wouldn't be a place for fantasy and fantasy is at it's best, when you can believe in it.

If someone gave me the choice between living a beautiful illusion and a harsh reality, it would be an easy decision for me.

We live in a unique age.
Science has given us a shelter from our "demons".

So, rather than recoiling from our imaginations,
we feel emboldened to explore them further.

However, even without the fears of the unknown,
our imaginations still continue to shape our reality.

A human dreams its reality into being.

We play card tricks to hide the encroaching darkness.
But sometimes the tricks drive it away.

As long as we keep using visual media the way we do now, I don't think we'll ever become completely rational creatures.

Well it was actually partly Bioshock inspired and there's also a small reference to it to be found on this image.
That's probably how you've end up here.

Niiice! The lighting is awesome. The details are very great, you really know how to make a picture feel real and complete! The skull and the little doll are quite creepy. Great drawing, eerie atmosphere!
(Is the number '1408' coincidence? )

TimKb In reply to Dying-Hopes [2013-03-15 18:17:24 +0000 UTC]

Nope, it's not a coincidence!

In fact, the doll happens to be a reference to something as well! (google the room together with it's room number underneath the doll, to find out where it's from!)

In any case, thanks for taking the time to check out those little details. I was worried that nobody would!

Oooh, I googled it and I found it's from a horror-game ^^ Nice! And the details in your piece are perfectly one with the drawing, and at the same time they really jump out and make you curious
You're welcome! ^^

The lighting in this piece is quite nice. It gives an overall tone that makes it seem both interesting and a little foreboding as well. The details and colors are fantastic as well. This hotel sounds quite odd; I have yet to determine if I feel it is in a good or a bad way. Lovely art though.

Thank you very much for the critique! Most of the impressions you've had are what I was hoping to achieve! The "on the same time warm and eerie" atmosphere is something I always like to stick into my work. Much like how every fairy tale has it's dark characteristics. It's what makes a fictitious atmosphere complete to me.
I'm glad you like it!

You are very welcome. You have done well with expressing the mood you wished to portray. I like the sense of the eerie undertones in a piece; I agree with you on that aspect. Very nicely done.
