HAPPY BATMAN DAY! These four characters mean a lot to me. My first professional job in comics was drawing them back in 1998 when BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES editor Darren Vincenzo called me up out of the blue to offer me a fill-in issue on the series. That one fill-in led to another and another, and I eventually became the full-time penciller on the book. I joined Batman Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing on their adventures for the next few years, drawing them hundreds of times, so it’s no surprise that I have a fondness for them (mullet and all).
Someone else who means a lot to me is writer Scott Peterson (who also happens to have a mullet). He started on B:GA at the same time that I did, and we clicked immediately. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to click with someone, you’ll know how special that is. Everything with Scott was so natural and effortless – we just “got” each other, and it made the experience of working on the book the highlight of my career. I used to love reading his scripts, not just for the great superhero stories, but also for Scott’s hilarious notes along the insightful direction that came from his years as a Batman editor and his genuine love of the medium. The guy really knows his stuff. He pushed me to be a better artist and has always been endlessly encouraging and supportive. It was a privilege to work with him and to become his friend.
Our time on the series was cut short much sooner than I wanted, and even though DC Comics has more or less forgotten about the four years’ worth of comics we produced together (only 10% of the series has ever been collected in trade paperback format, and B:GA isn’t even listed as one of our credits on DC’s official website), I remember each and every issue and I’m proud of our small contribution to the Batman mythos
