Description
Tell me friend, how does it feel to be forsaken by the realm of Man? Do their mortal ties and earthly coils beckon to your soul; cast adrift on the dreamless plains, forever searching for that shard of life you lost? Dreams are intangible, they are weak fathoms of hope and lust; they are wants, not needs. Failure is the hammer that cracks the intricate glass of your well-prepared dreams, all in your head, but it is the people that have strength to shatter the heart of your dreaming. You cry now, inside, but on the outside, your face is strong. Cathara, you do not need to hide, for we are all human inside.
Don't you feel that life is a bloody road? There are bodies littered on the ground. Can't you see that? Are your eyes even open, Talos? They are husks of bygone men and women who tried to walk the same path I did. History always repeats itself. I will not let myself become a husk. I will not give in to the pressures that strangle my heart. I don't want to vanish into the dark. I don't want to go gently. I-
You speak of 'I'. You use it like you are the only one left alive in the world. 'I' is singular and it is of no help to you. 'We' on the other hand, now that's a word worth fighting for. Do not believe for a second that you are the only one that matters to this Earth.
Do you not see the state of the mortal world? Times have changed. Don't be naive. To rely on others now is to live with a burgeoning bomb. Partners will eviscerate you, lovers will chain you, and friends will weigh you down into the darkest depths of the ocean. When my eyes close, this world will end. You know that, everyone does. No one is truly immortal, and even we fade into the dark, forgotten and alone. How many of our pantheon still walk this earth, hmm? I can count them on my fingers Talos.
We were once many but now we are few, that is true Cathara. Still, that does not mean our worlds are ending. There are people who want to believe. There are cities that burn bright in the night, in the darkness that we have grown to become so afraid of. Fear has corrupted your heart. It has made you weak. You smile no more. You look at life like it is a wounded beast pinning for death. What happened to your light in these last fifteen years? What happened to the girl I knew?
You call me a girl but you know I lost all innocence a long time ago. You grow up when you realize that the world around you, that your childhood reality, is a fabricated lie and a tale woven by parents to seduce you into living life. Pointless is the charade of our early lives for now we have to deal with the falloff from tearing down our nuclear facades. The endless possibilities of life are nothing more than roads to lose your soul. I have walked too many of them. They are pointless.
Is that why you sit here, on the Edge of the World, with legs dangling above the abyss? Have you forgotten your purpose, your-
We have no purpose! We had a purpose but now we don't. We are just old tales, paper myths, and spoken fantasies cast adrift through time. We are not modern, we are ancient, and no one believes in the past anymore. Everyone's eyes are always strained on divining the future.
Silence greets you then, for what is there to say to someone who has lost all way. Do you want a funeral with black ties and sombre faces? Do you want an urn? A casket? A lover to cry above you as they lower your broken body into the depths? We do not have these luxuries. Our bodies do not falter the way theirs do. We disappear, not decay. We vanish without pain.
Speaks the man who is dammed. You were once bulwark of life and the aegis of the strong, you helped those in need but they never did repay you in kind did they? Where are those mortals now, the very ones you once loved? Do they still harbor your statues and caress your sigils in prayer? There no more titans to fight, no more pure evils to smite, the people have grown beyond us. We are not needed anymore.
Some still believe in us. You do not need to be alone Cathara, you do not need to run into an abyss to look for purpose again. You just have to open your eyes to the light that sits beside you
Talos, you look at me with those eyes in expectance but I am no longer the woman you once knew. We have grown, we have aged and we have changed. My friend, look no more for gratification and approval from those around you. Look instead, into yourself, and find the man I once loved. The abyss is not death, it is not life, it is adventure and right now, I need that the most. I cannot rely on these mortals anymore. I have to find my own power.
Cathara, don't stand, please. Don't put that foot forward, don't let yourself fall into a sea, eternal and unclean. The monstrosities that hide below, they will eat your heart and devour your soul but we are eternal, so we will only be rendered their playthings. Do not let yourself be tortured till the end of time.
Tears will not fall today, Talos. Whatever demons the future may hold, whatever pain the fates may have in store for me, I will never be more afraid than now. There is courage to found at the bottom, at the edge of life. I rather go this way then to take-
You cry but why? Why would you even consider the end of life by knife and hand? You of all people, who once stood at the top of pantheon and dictated the day and night for the gods that stood below you. Have we fallen so far? We are not that forgotten. We are not so alone.
With age, I feel more mortal than ever. Eternity seems like torture and with each day that I am forgotten, I become less of who I am. Gods we are no more. The world doesn't need our kind today.
You are not alone-
Don't- don't touch me. Let me go. Push me out from your heart. Let me go-
No!
There is one last path for me to walk and another for you as well! Do not fall with me here. You are still needed. I know there will be a storm, that there will be war, so you'd best get running back and reclaim your title as a hero of yore. Leave me.
I won't forget you, Cathara.
No, I am afraid we will, Talos.
We will see each other again.
We won't be the same.
Then we'd just meet again for the first time.
I- you- goodbye.
Cathara!
