Description
Here's my submission for the IDW Cover Contest being held on their boards. The assignment was to create a ready for color inked cover featuring a main character and 2 supporting characters in a specific setting.I'm in the Doublecross group. Windcharger and Scrapper must also be included. The setting is a jungle on Earth.
I had a lot of fun with this piece. It was fun to try and balance the different references available for each character. I wanted to have as much toy accuracy as possible while keeping the classic cartoon and current comic looks in mind.
After working up some roughs, I penciled and inked all elements separately. That's 3 full figures and 2 background elements. I wanted maximum editing potential and I wanted to be able to color the elements separately later (painted, fully rendered background and cel style coloring for the figures). I hope to post a few work in progress pics later.

hey tim, great looking cover and good luck with the contest!
i'd say one thing that stands out to me is that the bots seem to meld together a bit in the composition and that's due to the fact that all the thick outlines you have are the same width throughout the piece. perhaps thinning out those lines on the bots that go further down into the background would clear up the crowd a bit?

Well, after finally perusing the Doublecross entries, your's definitely stood out for me. I gave you my vote before I even realised that you were the guy giving me such nice support.
There's a lot of guys in this competition that drew everything seperately then mixed them together on the computer. I almost feel cheated after having such difficulty fitting Brawl in my own. BUt I shall bear it in mind for the future.
Once again, good luck in the competition, and if you get thru' I hope I don't, because there is no way I can match this kind of work.

Nice piece. I like the "Voltron Pose." I love that they're accurate to the toys. Even have Doublecross'es gun attach to the dragon-head-eye-hole. Great. *shouts as he leaves* Nice inks too....

Thanks. My thinking in going for a more toy accurate Doublecross was mainly because he's an obscure character to most folks. Being able to recognize him was important. As for making Windcharger more toy accurate, I just felt the old animation/Marvel design was cheating way too much with the simplification. The toy has a lot of very interesting shapes when applied to a more modern comics version of Windcharger. Scrapper was pretty much a mix of toy, cartoon and comic reference.

I had a lot of fun inking the environment. I went straight from rough sketch to inks on the background stuff. Mostly used brush pen to separate the more organic elements from the more mechanical TFs.

I was lazy with the background cos it should be ready to color, and the way I do backgrounds like that, well lets say there isn't mutch to coler left, so I just put in the most basic stuff, ruing my pic.
