I think the worst thing is that, in the regions that have already done it, going green has boosted the economy. We'll actually gain money and economic strength by becoming carbon neutral; my home region got back what we invested before we had even completed the jump, and did so thirty years ago.
It is sad to see some governments pouring more money into subsidizing fossil-dependent industries every year than what they'd need to replace their entire power infrastructure with green, or at least neutral, methods.

Yeh, it's kinda nuts. Green energy production and installation produces more electricity and creates more jobs per dollar, and yet somehow people think that we'll lose out by transitioning off fossil fuels. Like, as long as the people in the fossil fuel industry can be transitioned into the new economy fairly, there's literally no long term downside to doing it.

not to mention self-sustainability economics: my home city has no fuel imports for the industrial and transport branches, since they all use bio-fuels produced as a byproduct from sewage treatment. This makes us less vulnerable to fluctuations in oil price.

They are! The development of archologies and carbon-neutral construction methods is going very fast there.
And I recently moved, and the new city I live in have taken after our example. It seems most Swedish municipalities are going the right way even though central government barely does anything. If only the same was true for america.

lovely debate i had yesterday ended with
"well people used to believe the earth was flat, and we didn't use electricity until a few hundred years ago so scince isn't perfect and my hypothesis is perfectly valid!"
at that point i just gave up.

Too many people take "freedom of speech" from it's original intent of "my opinion has the same value as your opinion" into something more like "my opinion has the same value as your evidence". It's completely fucked political discourse online.

Brings me back to how if you can fill someone's head with enough of your arguments there's no room left for anything else.

Yeh, and it's a double edged sword cos like, it can work to inoculate you from bullshit, or it can indoctrinate you into that same bullshit.

Yeah. How people think and feel is like a currency or something. You invest in advertising/media to (try to) acquire shares in a demographic. Choose your battlefields, send your troops in, try to secure an advantage. I try to focus on what I can do in the here and now most of the time. The big picture is scary.

There's a reason we have the concept of "a war for hearts and minds". In a democracy, the philosophy that sways the most people gets to run the show. That's why I try to contribute n shit, even if it's preaching to the choir - those who are looking forward to playing the fiddle while Rome burns aren't going to stop their bullshit, and convince as many people as possible that it's fine. You've gotta push back against that where possible.

I agree. Just wish we didn't have to fight so hard sometimes.

I forget the exact numbers but I saw something similar to this.
*Regarding the high odds of getting in an accident, possibly fatal, from texting and driving.* "Won't be me!"
*Regarding the much lower odds of winning the lottery.* "You never know!"

Convince people they're too smart to fall for something and you'll be able to convince them anything.

The Higgs-Boson being real or not doesn't really register in most people's minds the same way that climate change being man-made does.

I agree, most people don't have a reason to think about it, it's something that is taken for granted and naturally goes over most of these idiots' heads to begin with... Boson is too big of a word in their minds and they probably don't even know that Higgs is the person it's named after...
