Personally, I prefer the PlayStation line of consoles, as well as the DualShock controllers, for RPGs and the like. For example, I played through the original Dark Souls through several times on my PS3, and Dark Souls doesn't feel like Dark Souls without a DualShock controller. For shooters and such, I prefer XBox controllers and consoles: it just feels better. On a Dualshock, for example, my fingers go to the left analog stick, the X button and the LB and RB, while on an XBox controller they go to the left/right analog sticks and the triggers. The latter feels more natural and intuitive for me-for shooters, at least. RPG's such as Fallout, Mass Effect and Kingdom Hearts are better for me on PlayStation (the much higher accuracy and sensitivity of the D-pad is a huge boon in these games), while Halo, Call of Duty and Gears of War are great XBox games (I feel that the analog sticks are more refined and accurate).
But that's pretty much all personal preference, and I mostly focus on PC with Steam and GOG these days anyway (though I still get lots of mileage out of my Afterglow XBox 360 controllers and my DualShock 3's).
