Awesome Drawing, so pissed off that Red5 Changed the Design of the Female Engineer, This Design was my favorite. I quit the game since the change. My Engineer will never be the same with full pants.

Hi there!
EHHH?!?! They changed the design O_O I had no idea
*looks it up*
*can't find anything...* Can you link me?? xD I'm not the best at finding things...

Actually, to be honest, I love Engie, but couldn't play a female character because of the half pants >.< So I made myself a large, red-head Scotsman.

Yep better yet i can show you from the official trailer Β "www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw29me… " @ about 1:33 you'll see the Female Engineer and their new Design.
I'm Very Disappointed at the design for i really loved the classic one Leg Design. i have quit the game cause of the change and my money will be going elsewhere.

One strange thing is that when I search up stuff to do with Firefall, I keep getting stuff from years ago 0.o;;

I quit because of their attitude towards people who had a problem with the engineer's design before. They just steamrolled people who had a problem and said they could just play another class. I didn't neccesaily want them to change anything, but they didn't even acknowledge that some people had a problem with it. If they had just said, 'We understand that you have a problem with this. We understand where you are coming from. But we like this design and want to stick with it' I would have been fine with that. That's sticking to their guns. I can respect that if they really think it looks better.

I know for myself, that I'm always self-conscious of how I look when I go outside, and that mentality is brought in with me when I play a game. If I'm running around with half my butt sticking out, even if I'm in first-person mode, I'm really self-conscious of that. Even though, I know that other people know that I didn't choose to look that way, I still feel like I'll get judged for it.

the community bitched and complained until the developers changed the engineers design to the way they like it. if the developers is that easily manipulated, then i want no part of it. i was loving the original design, people need to realize that this is sci-fi fantasy and if the developers want their engineers to run around with a unique body suit then so be it. but constantly on the forums, on youtube, on twitter, and reddit "change the female engineers, we want pants" i beg and pleaded for them to keep the design and make the pants a Red Bean item for cosmetic look...if people wanted pants so bad they could've just added it as a cosmetic piece. but they let the community dictate what should be what. the players might as well made the game.

and i know how you feel about being self-conscious i was that way myself but when i see a confidant female soldier in gear like the Engineer, i have to support that. the original design was unique and people are afraid of change.
just cause people wouldn't walk outside with that outfit on doesn't mean the game has to change either.Β

I can see your point about the Devs being too easily sway. If they're willing to change this, then what else are they willing to change when pressured?

But I think it's a bit unfair to just assume that they're bad guys here. It took a lot of people a lot of effort to get them to change their mind on a small, cosmetic change. I would imagine that it would take even more effort to get changes done to core mechanics.

Perhaps when you see the engineer with half her butt hanging out, you can see a confident woman. I can't. She was designed and modelled and animated by external forces. Her perceived confidence is not her own, but was placed apon her. That doesn't mean that a woman cannot be confident looking like that, and there are certainly ways to build up a personality to support such a claim, but this is the player's character we're talking about not an NPC or party character which is given a backstory.

Should a part of the audience be forced to feel gross when playing as their own gender in the class they want? When there's a difference in how a person is (real life personality/values/morals/etc) and how they are forced to appear in a game, there is a certain amount of dissonance created. It's like the uncanny valley where the closer we get things to look human, the more we notice the differences. That's why I chose to play a large, redhead, Scotsman. He is nothing like me (except for maybe distant genetic heritage) which removes any dissonance I might have felt by playing a female character.

And this isn't just true for female characters with limited customization. I know some men who have trouble playing male characters because there is dissonance between them and this preset male character who is large and macho.

Yes, in other mmos, female characters are often outfitted with little amount of skin coverage, but there's a choice there and more often than not, there might actually be some bikini that I do in fact like the look of.

I think this also was blown out of proportion because all the other female designs, by comparison, were more covered up in intelligent ways. Yes, it's fantasy, but when you've built up a reputation for designing rather intelligent armor that makes sense at first glance, then suddenly put out a design that would clearly hurt to wear, it's going to call attention to itself. But worse still, the female engineer can be easily compared to the male one and this is where I think a lot of the problems arise since it seems unfair that both get one sleeve off, but only the female gets the one pant leg.

When you watch a movie or load up a game, the introduction is what gets you into the world of the story. It has to be crafted in a way to make sure the audience understand what kind of a world they are entering, what it considered strange and what is considered normal. In Firefall, we see 'decked out, buff dudes', 'rather well covered females with equally large weapons' and then we see a female with half her butt hanging out. The contrast is startling. If this were TERA Online, on the other hand, we wouldn't bat an eye since the world has been built up in a way that seeing little girls in bikinis running around is normal.

My. I've written a long response D:

Pretty good, the perspective on her right foot is a bit off, making it look slightly warped in part do to that recess going in to far.

The arm gun could be better defined and let the actual characters arm show through a bit more, you've got two reactor or venting points coming off of a large disk on part of the arm that keep the upper arm from being clearly defined from the lower part, in addition to breaking up the form and flow a bit. Having the hand be visible really helps make the armature feel like a piece of armor, rather than a replacement for a blown off limb. You also might be interested in looking at how the "omni tools" look in general, they tend to be a broader section with a bit of piping and a small protruding gun on the top.
I'm not sure exactly what is at the end of this one, it looks like mechanical shapes simply for the sake of adding more stuff, function over form, even in sci fi is read a lot better by the viewer when parts are made for a specific purpose.

Overall it's a fairly good piece though, I do quite like the general pose and the hair/face, however the nose is a bit small and slightly to far the the right side of her face so it does add a slight uncertainty when looking at it.

Based on a lot of your other work, I'm guessing this one was a bit of a quickie.

I think that's the longest comment I've ever gotten *o* thank you!
You're right, I had really no idea what I was drawing most of the time. I tried looking for reference pictures to figure out the 'feel' of firefall equipment but it can be really hard to tell what on earth's going on in a single, low resolution picture :/ I'm actually not even sure how the Repair Arm works...

Yeah, this one is a bit of a quickie. I have quite a bit of school work to do, but I also really wanted to try this out. Hopefully I can make some more sci-fi pictures in the future that actually make sense

Some good still references for any future attempts.

Also, this article might interest you a bit.

The arm is a small item that folds into the case, then comes out with a new "head" that allows it to function differently. Playing the frame does definitely help if you haven't done so yet. I've got a spare beta key if you need one.

Just realized I haven't thanked you for the links.

THANK YOU!! (I really enjoy looking at concept art, let alone read about the thinking behind them. So awesome~~~)

Oh my gosh! That reference is perfect!!! (and much higher resolution than I could find >=O) I've been to the FireFall website so many times and have never seen that page! (or the others) *bookmarked* How do I fail so badly at Googling...

... key...? *////* I...don't have a key... um....

I just googled Firefall engineer, first and seventh result. Don't recall where the first engi concept art sheet came from, it is not on the media section of the Firefall sight sadly, but the lone engi came as a background for some other page of the sight. The article I recall from way back, one of the first blogs they posted.

If you need any Firefall concepts or references and can't find something, just ask, while it is sadly pretty limited on what they've released, I have a fairly complete archive of what has been leaked or shown on my computer.

And if you want a key, just ask, though I'll need the email you used for your Firefall account.
If you don't want to give me that, then I can try and generate a key for you (haven't done this before, so I wouldn't be able to help you if something went wrong there).

Ahh... maybe adding 'concept' 'online' threw off the search.

Yeah... I'd really like that key ^^ here's my email: animagi.ink@gmail.com
Thank you again. I think I shall now go off to absorb that website...

Also could be the personalized search results, I tend to look for a lot of game art, concept art, and fan art so when I make a search I get a lot more results along those lines than most other people.

Key's sent, check your spam if you don't see it soon, and happy absorbing
If you ever want some help in game or someone to play with and I'm on, just ask. IGN terricon4
