An improved variant of the Me.Kpfg, the Me.Kpfg Ausf J was developed in late 1943 with a prototype finishing development, and trials by mid 1944. By the time the tank entered production, production lines were swamped with Panzer IV, Panthers, Tigers, and the new King Tiger. This resulted in very few models being built with only 250 built by the end of the war.
When compared to the previous models the Ausf J's most striking feature was it's angled armor much like that found on the Panther, and King Tiger. This helped to increase the tank's survivability, and War Historians say that if the war lasted a few more years, the Me.Kpfg Ausf J, or it's successor the Me.Kpfg J/II would have replaced the Panzer VI on the production line.
In combat, the Me.Kpfg Ausf J was very comparable to the Panzer IV, and exceeded it in some departments such as storing 3 more shells, and of course it's increased survivability. In early 1945, a total of 12 were extensively modified on the field by their crew, adding extra armor, and one even replaced it's damaged 75mm gun for a captured American 76mm gun.
