Description #30 / Link

I can’t believe I got the first date, let alone a year, Jeten thought suddenly, disrupting the mental silence between them.

I can’t believe you got the head of an alien intelligence agency pregnant, his twin brother Meren sent back, groaning slightly aloud and looking away.

Eh, it happens.

It does not just happen! Meren shot him a withering glare, and Jeten shrugged.

He stuck out his tongue at him. I think I read about it in a book once. Besides, we love each other, of course we’d have children together.

Meren gave him an incredulous look. Not so soon! You only knew each other seven months before he showed up and told you he was pregnant.

Four months along, too. Baby’s due any day now.

You’re a fucking wreck, Jet. Meren sighed, shaking his head. I warned you not to associate with the elite.

Out loud, Jeten said, “I’m a great waiter, really. Everyone likes me. Maybe I should get back into that.”

“I thought you liked pursuing the arts? Isn’t, uh… charcoal enough for you?”

“Oh, I love it. But I like being a waiter as well. Walking around handing out those little sandwiches and stuff? That’s great.”

“You’re so lame.”

The doorbell rang, and Meren slumped against the couch he was sitting on. He kicked at Jeten, and his twin rolled his eyes. He got up and answered it. To his pleasant surprise, his boyfriend was standing in front of the door, one hand on his hip and the other on top of his heavy belly. Jeten moved over so he could come in. “Welcome home, love. How are you feeling?”

“Tired and sore. It’s been a long week.”

“I’d ask you to tell me about it, but I’m sure it’s all-”

“Classified.”

“Exactly.” Jeten took his elbow and led him further into the apartment. “Now, Nilzhan, why don’t you have a seat, and I’ll get you a heat pack and some tea? Are you hungry?”

“Not really. I just had a meal.” They entered the living room, and Nilzhan froze. “Who’s that?”

Nilzhan didn’t like surprises, and he especially didn’t like new people being someplace that was supposed to only include him and his lover. Jeten had completely forgotten to mention that Meren was there, he’d been so focused on greeting Nilzhan.

You didn’t tell your paranoid spy baby momma that I’d be here? Meren asked telepathically.

Oops! he sent back, and then said aloud to Nilzhan, “This is my twin brother, Meren.”

“Hey.”

“We’re fraternal twins, which is why we don’t really look alike. We’re the same height, though, and our markings are the same color.”

You’re rambling, Meren scolded him. He’s freaking out.

Say something! Jeten shot him a look.

“So, uh… I guess I’m going to be your kid’s uncle. I’ll be the coolest uncle, of course. Jeten has given me plenty of time to prepare to be the coolest uncle ever.”

“You told your brother about the baby? Jeten, I told you not to tell anyone!” Nilzhan wasn’t very happy about Meren’s attempt to break the ice. “It’s too dangerous!”

Jeten held up his hands in surrender. “Sorry! I can’t keep anything from Meren.” Great job, Mare. Now he’s mad at me.

“It’s not my fault you never told him about me!”

“What? I totally did.” He could remember quite clearly telling Nilzhan about his twin.

“Oh. You did.”

“Wait-” Nilzhan stepped away from Jeten, looking agitated “You have a telepathic twin brother?”

He nodded. “Yeah. We’re permanently linked. He can hear everything I’m thinking and sense what I feel. Also, he can talk to me with his power. I did tell you we were half Conscirean.”

He assumed we were both telepathy-less, Jet.

“Oh. Huh. I guess I should have explained.”

“Don’t read my mind!” Nilzhan snapped at Meren. “How are you getting past my defenses?”

“Oh, fuck, I just realized whose mind I’m reading.” Meren tried to bury himself in between the couch cushions. Jeten was curious, while Nilzhan clenched his fists. “The baby’s. It’s linked to your mind, and I’m linked to it. That’s weird and I hate it. It’s giving me a headache thinking about it.”

Jeten thought that was wonderful, and hugged Nilzhan, who didn’t look thrilled at all. “Our baby’s telepathic!”

“Hey, Jet, is the baby linked to you? Think something.”

“Sure!” Jeten recited a song lyric in his head. “Did you get it?”

“I hate that song. It’s on every music station. But I only heard it once, so it’s not linked to you yet. And no, Nilzhan, you don’t have to worry about other telepaths reading your mind through the baby. It’s just because we’re related.” Meren covered his eyes with his hands. “And thankfully, it looks like I can shut off the link if I cover my eyes.”

But you can still hear me, Jeten thought, smiling. You can always hear me.

Of course. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Nilzhan sighed. “Fine. I’ll look into it later. For now…” He put a hand on his back and stretched, wincing. “I’d like to get some rest before this baby arrives.”
