Description #64 / Pack

“I can’t do this anymore.. not with you,” her best friend told her, refusing to look her in the eyes. “I’m not going to use my powers to visit this world again.”

“Why not? I thought you liked coming here.” She couldn’t believe he would be abandoning her. He was the only person that really cared about her, the only person who enjoyed spending time with her. How could he? He was supposed to be her friend.

But he looked terribly sad, eyes watery, so maybe it wasn’t his choice anymore. “My father finally came home. He said it’s too dangerous for my mother and I to be visiting other realms, so we’re going to move to his house.”

“I thought you said your dad lived with his wife and her kids. Did they break up?”

“No. He said she’s fine with us moving in. I don’t get why we’re moving, nothing bad has ever happened to me, and my mother never said anything about us moving until Father showed up a few days ago.” He sat back on his heels and sighed. “We’ve been focused on packing, but when I asked my Mother if I could come see you, he got all… weird.”

“Weird?”

“I could tell he was really mad at us, but he pretended it was okay and just told me how worried he was for my safety. It was like he thought I couldn’t possibly understand why he was concerned. Then he said I could come and tell you I had to go, but he didn’t really want me too. It’s like he’s scared of something he hasn’t told us about.”

“Will you ever get to play with me again?” She hated that her eyes were full of tears now too, but she couldn’t help it. If this was the last time she would get to see her only friend…

He shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe my father will stop being afraid. He’s an Angel, though. They’re weird about their emotions.”

“Is his wife an Angel?”

“No. She’s a nymph. So are her kids. And my mother’s a demon, and my unborn sibling and I are hybrids. I’m gonna miss you, Destiny.”

“I’ll miss you too, Moira.” She hugged him. There was a rumbling sound and a flash of light. Destiny pulled away to rub her eyes. When she opened them, a man with sickly pale skin and golden blond hair full of white feathers was frowning down at them both.

Moira turned and looked up, the tip of his pointed tail twitching. “Hello, Father.”

“You’ve said your goodbyes, Momo, now- let’s get you back home! I don’t like the look of this place at all. And you have no idea how dangerous humans are, goodness.” His voice sounded like it was about to break at any second, and he spoke quietly, eyes darting around as if he was worried he was being watched. He reached down and lifted Moira up, holding him close. “Come on, come on. We’re almost done packing, no time to waste.”

“Can I come visit my friend again?”

“Why would you want to be friends with a creature like that? Don’t be silly. You’ll have a brother and two sisters to play with, and a little sibling in a few months.”

The two of them disappeared before Destiny could say anything to them, and Moira reached out to her right as they left.

As soon as they were back at his mother’s house, Moira squirmed out of his father’s arms and went looking for him. He found him in his bedroom, packing his clothes into a box. He ran up to him and hugged him, burying his face against his side. His mother made a small sound of surprise and patted his head. “What’s wrong, Moira? Was your friend not there?”

“She was there. But Father took me home before I was done talking to her. Mother, why can’t I see Destiny again?”

“It’s too dangerous.”

“Why?”

“Your father knows what’s best for us,” his mother told him, bitterness creeping into his voice. “Just like he always has.”

“He’s scared of something.”

“...Moira, start gathering your toys, and come real close.” He did as he was told and gathered up an armful of toys. He plopped them onto his bed and began tucking them into an empty box. His mother leaned over to grab one of the larger toys and whispered to him, “Someone threatened your father when they learned you existed. You’ve been followed, and they’ve been getting very close to you in the human realm, according to him.”

His grip on one of his plushies tightened, and he swallowed. Destiny had pointed out a strange man following them one day, but they’d lost sight of him when they walked onto a busy sidewalk with other humans.

“They also stalked one of your stepsisters when she visited the human realm for the first time last week, even though the trip wasn’t planned.”

“Am I going to be able to take all my things?”

“Yes. Your father has a very big house, and we’re getting a floor for all our things.”

“What about my plants?” He had a small garden that he tended to every day. “They’ll die if we leave them…”

“Finish packing these toys, and go ask your father if there’s any gardening space at his house you can use and if he can help you transfer the plants into pots we can take along.”

“Okay!”
