  “If you would just let me explain!” Miguel argued as his family incircled, he could just barely hear the rattling of bones as Hector tried to keep up with the Riveras as they pulled him away from what they percieved as a threat.
  “Explain what mijo? That you disobeyed direct orders and went and got yourself into this mess?!” abuelita Elena exclaimed as she held the skull guitar away from the boy, using it to point at the skeleton a few feet away from them “Music is a curse Miguel! And this is why! It does unnatural things!”
  “But it wasn’t music that did it! My magic did!” Miguel protested, trying to reach for the guitar, afraid that his grandmother would break it as she’d done with his own on the day he’d ran away. “It’s not the guitar’s fault! It’s mine and I was trying to fix it!”
The Riveras murmured amongst themselves before Elena cut them off once more, keeping the guitar well out of Miguel’s reach.
  “Fix this? Miguel you can barely control your magic! How would you have fixed this? By bringing in the problem itself to the police?”
  “No! I got him to follow me back!”
  “Why?!”
  “So that I could undo this whole mess! It was going to be so easy, all I had to do was promise to help him see his…” Miguel paused, realization downing on him as the words fell out of his mouth “….His daughter…”
He turned to look back at the skeleton that had been following him the whole journey back, and regret quickly clawed away at his heart as he saw the look on Hector’s face. A look of pure betrayal.
  “….H-Hector I…” He needen’t have even bothered to say anything else. The mute skeleton backed away from Miguel and his family and swiftly ran off as fast as his legs would allow him to. “Hector! Hector wait I’m sorry!”
Before Miguel could follow, he felt someone grab the hood of his jacket and pull him back. He looked up to see the disappointed look on his father’s face.

Because even the Magic, Bards and Necromancy AU needs to punch people in the feels.
Yeah, Hector wouldn’t react very well to finding out Miguel lied to him the way he did. He really was starting to like hanging out with the kid, and the journey back to Santa Cecilia was nothing if not wild and memorable. So learning that it was all for naught was pretty upsetting of an experience.
Miguel on the other hand, feels nothing but guilt, specially after seeing how hurt his new friend was. All because he made a mistake…
