Description
We exited the elevator and arrived in a small foyer that opened onto a surrounding balcony. The foyer was empty, save for some benches. A woman was leaning against the far wall, beside a set of double doors that I presumed lead to the second tower I’d seen on our flight here. I didn’t know her role here, but she was resting casually against the wall, with an air of indifference.

“Crow. I see you’ve brought your friends,” she said, as we approached. She nodded towards the pair of corvids that had alighted on the upper balcony that separated the upper building. They looked almost too large to be crows, but both were studiously ignoring us.

Morrigan frowned as she approached. “Hawk. At least I have friends,” she retorted, sounding irritated.

The woman smiled, ignoring the barb, and her gaze drifted to me. “It looks like you were successful.”

Morrigan sighed, and while she pointedly avoided looking back at me, I could feel the weight of her consideration. “That remains to be seen,” she said after a pause.

The other woman continued to examine me, her expression unreadable. “Where’s Hel?” she finally asked.

“I’m not her keeper.” I hadn't spent much time with either of them, but even in that short amount I had sensed the animosity between Hel and Morrigan.

At that she let out a laugh, and she shifted her attention back to Morrigan. “Well, someone ought to be.”

“I agree, but I’m not volunteering.”

The woman stretched and moved away from the wall. I caught a glimpse of a pistol under her jacket, and the bulge under her other arm lead me to believe there was a second one there as well. “Either of you armed?”

Morrigan shrugged. “Even if I was armed he’d never be harmed by my hand, you should know that by now, Kára.” She gestured back towards me dismissively. “I don’t think he even knows how to hold a weapon, let alone use one.”

I didn't know how to respond to that so tried to look as harmless as I could. I suspect that was easier than I'd like.

“Rituals must still be observed Morrigan.”

Morrigan and Kára are not close friends, but are certainly aligned with each other's principles. This is largely working towards shaping the story I am working towards. For those curious, this will all circle back into Áine's part in this and Tír na nÓg.
