You don't normally see high level wizards in towns of only a few thousand people, but Balthazar finds it relaxing. The big cities have all these people who think they're entitled to your time, that their money can buy your time indefinitely. Out here, few people hold the illusion that they can pay him for much of his time, and people from elsewhere will only come to him if there's something serious.

It gives him a lot more time to research and work on his own things undistracted.

At least until the next group of adventurers shows up because a local dungeon is pouring out monsters, and they really, really need a few extra magic items, can't you please make them for us?

He charges double, of course - and then doesn't have to deal with the nobles for another year.

If only his research wasn't so expensive...
