Description Professor Antelle is a character from the original French novel, The Monkey Planet (AKA Planet of the Apes).

In the novel, he invented a spaceship that can travel the speed of light. He along with his close friend journalist Ulysse Mérou and pupil Arthur Levain travel to the star Betelgeuse and landed on an inhabitable planet they named "Soror". Ulysse and Antelle get captured by Apes while Arthur was shot. Ulysse was eventually free but Antelle somehow reverted into a primitive savage along with the other primitive humans, no longer the brilliant scientist he once was.

In my idea for a new Planet of the Apes cartoon, his full name is Jean-François Antelle. He's still a French scientist. But he now lives in America. He doesn't join the crew, but instead takes on the "Dr. Hasslein" role and invents an experimental space-drive and chose the space shuttle Immigrant to test it.

Professor Antelle chose Ulysses Meroe to command the mission. He and Ulysses have been friends since Ulysses was a kid. When he was 13 years old, Ulysses was on a school field trip when he meets the brilliant scientist Antelle. They both have an interest in space travel which cemented their friendship since. This is why Antelle chose Ulysses.

Ulysses was one of the few friends Antelle has, because Antelle is a misanthropic, much like he was in the novel and George Taylor.

I based his design on the Hungarian comic book adaptation of the novel. You can read it here. [link]

How does a brilliant scientist become a drooling neanderthal so quickly?

That's what I wonder, because there doesn't seem to be any evidence or hints that the apes gave him a lobotomy. I never read the book, but from what I can figure is that his misanthropic views combined with seeing humans as primitive and inferior to the apes must have affected his mind and (perhaps intentionally) willed himself into becoming one of them.

What if he did come along on the voyage, went with Ulysses and talked to the apes, but dies later on of old age maybe.

I suppose he could, unless the stress kills him. Or Zaius might give him a lobotomy!
