Description This mornings speedpainting. See if I can keep up 1 a day XD. Doubt it but still, here's today's one. Think i'll be working with these colors a lot more!
A foundry on an offworld Colony - thinking about Riddick.

Let me know what you all think, last crits really helped me push the limit further!

Inspired by Craig Mullins, like pretty much all of my works; he's just too awesome.

yeah, getting into another size - like portrait or squared is still a bit scary for me

Looks great.

Interesting choice of colors.
Can I ask why you picked these and not black/red/orange?
There is nothing wrong with your TV set, um sorry current color palette.
No attack, just curious.

I like it as it is, has enough atmosphere for me, do not need people/extra stuff unless you need something to show scale.

TitusLunter In reply to sevenofeleven [2011-10-21 08:19:01 +0000 UTC]

well, I have been working with oranges for a long time. Especially in landscapes, to get a more romantic mood. What happens when you work with greens is that the scenery starts to feel more toxic (when combined with the right shapes and highlight colors, otherwise you get jungle) and thats what I was going for with this one. I worked with reds so much that it was a real challenge to get proper atmospherics with other colors

Its not too often that people discuss why they pick one color over another.
Thanks for taking the time.

any time
The art community slowly changed into a very closed one, I've seen it happen. I'd like to break that habit any time I can, so if you have any more questions or if you'd like to discuss something feel free to do so

Great artwork!
It's really hard to find something to crit...

I do feel that the left side is maybe a little bit too undefined, so it really takes away from the wonderful detail in the rest of the artwork.

Sahdirah [2011-10-11 20:10:08 +0000 UTC]

This is kind of vague I know, but I feel like the focal point my eye is drawn to is the area 2/3 up and a bit to the right of center, with the two larger spots of golden glow (a viewing area perhaps?). But other than the fact that there's a glow there, it doesn't really feel like anything interesting is happening in that spot - perhaps if you altered the scale a bit so that we can see people looking out onto the track? ( I say "change the scale" because for that to look right the cars would need to be bigger).

I think having more of a storytelling/human/emotional element in the focal point would make this image a lot more striking. Not that it isn't beautiful already.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TitusLunter In reply to Sahdirah [2011-10-11 20:51:22 +0000 UTC]

Well the focal point was supposed to be where the bundle of lights are, right of the centre; and the focal point is all that emphasized because it's more an establishing shot - like a panoramic mountain view; so that kind of throws the scale a bit
Thanks for the in depth comment tho, always appreciated.

i would have to agree with the comment before mine that you need to put something in to give us a sense of scale. other then that i think you've got done a great job of keeping a rough style while giving the viewer enough information to both understand what they see and let their imagination take over in parts. nice job.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TitusLunter In reply to Dale-Walters [2011-10-11 15:25:28 +0000 UTC]

Agreed on the scale thing; I might update it with some vehicles ^^

Amazing. Don't take this to seriously, but I think you should add some people, just to add scale. You know, a couple bums, or factory workers, or elves, whatever. Maybe a couple hoverboard racers or something, cause this kinda reminds me of an industrial race track.
Anyhoo, nice work! I wish I had your skill...
Any chance of some wallpapers?

Nice! Wow... you added that in, like, 3 minutes.
Say, what brushes do you use? I really like that rough stroke style...

TitusLunter In reply to John-Boyer [2011-10-11 21:01:10 +0000 UTC]

i'll upload them to megaupload tomorrow. If I forget, gimme a reminder
And, its a mix of brushes found on the net and a few home brewed ones. Very custom, very amazing

Keeping it small to avoid art thievery I'm afraid.
And yeah, talked to some more people. Seems like scale is still an issue, tho I am reluctant to solve it by putting figures in just because it's such an easy shortcut. Maybe i'll update it with some vehicles to show scale. Thanks for mentioning it tho, always appreciate it

John-Boyer In reply to TitusLunter [2011-10-11 20:50:24 +0000 UTC]

np. Thats too bad about art thievery... but, at least people like your art enough to want to steal it.

TitusLunter In reply to John-Boyer [2011-10-11 21:01:52 +0000 UTC]

well, hasn't happened yet. But i've seen it all to much. Not too long ago with love4art or something like it, stealing art and printing it on t-shirt. Very uncool :E
