Description A quick glance at my work over this year.

During the middle third of the year, I noticed something wasn't quite right about the way I was doing faces and I made subtle adjustments to the facial proportions of my style. Skin was also something I kept trying to improve on and it remains one of the hardest to render for me.

I got really experimental in the last 4 months, what with playing around with line work and colouring style. I was also drawing with pen and paper exclusively during December, as I was working away from home during that time.

Looking forward to the new year and doing more drawing!

Thanks to everyone who've supported me and given me much appreciated words of encouragement and advice

Great to see you trying out more styles and more variety, as evidenced here. Continue with this approach and I'll bet you'll manage to somehow get even better in 2013. Your pen work is lovely by the way, and your digital work is getting sharper and more varied, as I mentioned awhile ago I really like the calligraphy/ for lack of a better word "digital wood block" look painting style that you've developed as well.

All the best in 2013

awww you should draw anyway even if you have a block - think of your favourite characters and just draw what comes to mind - even if it's just a portrait it'll help

You've done a lot of amazing and inspiring art this year! Keep it up! I still can't believe you drew that leopard piece in BALLPOINT PEN. O_o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TixieLix In reply to Mayleth [2012-12-31 00:20:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, hun! Is it because it's in pen? It's really not that hard once you get used to the idea it's not erasable, and it's no different if you were to draw scribbles to set up and then line it properly on top of it + shading Have a go once you're comfortable to give it a try - very good for training yourself at accuracy and speed!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mayleth In reply to TixieLix [2012-12-31 01:31:12 +0000 UTC]

Well I always set up my drawings in basic shapes with different lines to set up the face, inclination of the body... and with pen can't erase though lines :l Not sure it would work for me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TixieLix In reply to Mayleth [2012-12-31 01:34:57 +0000 UTC]

You don't need to erase the set up lines if you do them lightly - by the time you go over it with the actual line work and shading, those initial lines will be barely visible. But it does takes heaps of practice to get used to since it's all about controlling how much pressure you apply with the pen and it can be more tricky than pencils. Let me know if you wanna give it a try though?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mayleth In reply to TixieLix [2012-12-31 01:53:39 +0000 UTC]

The scanner is hyper sensitive though and will pick up on all the lines, no matter how light. I mean I might still give it a shot down the line... we'll see Maybe take a picture with the camera instead.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TixieLix In reply to Mayleth [2013-01-01 06:13:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah usually photos are better than scanning for these sorts of things, but it's not really an issue if it does pick up on the set up lines. A lot of the times that actually gives the drawing more depth because it shows your thinking process. If you recall in my leopard sketch, I over estimated the length of it's head and that is clearly visible still XD

Mayleth In reply to TixieLix [2013-01-01 06:21:04 +0000 UTC]

By 'these sort of things' do you mean pen drawings? Cos for my pencil drawings camera never picked up on the depth or details

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TixieLix In reply to Mayleth [2013-01-01 06:28:26 +0000 UTC]

I meant for sketches on paper in general, whether they are in pen or pencils. If you're finding that cameras aren't picking up the detailing you've done in pencil, it could be that it's just too faint. I usually have more problem getting a scanner to capture details than I do with cameras. If anything, the camera usually HAS captured it, but you need to plug it into photoshop to bring it out with the brightness/contrast?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mayleth In reply to TixieLix [2013-01-01 06:33:18 +0000 UTC]

I've done that exact method before and I found it didn't work for me... I just find the scanner is better at it
