Normally, i would use graphite pencils, but this one is all mechanical pencil, HB lead since I did most of it at school.
Tips... Ummm.... other than practice, i would say start out light first, then darken things more and more. Keep an eraser handy. Blend with a tissue or something similar, not your fingers. And...experiment!! Find what works best for you since what works for one person may not work for others. :] Hope it helps even a little bit~

Hair... uhh usually, I'd start by sketching out the general shape and fill in the shadows. Dark hair with little reflection is pretty easy-- do lots of stoke-y motions. I draw the reflections by not pressing too hard on the pencil for a kind of medium darkness and then shading the parts that need to be shaded. Usually, I use an eraser to make highlights lighter, if you know what I mean. Light hair... huh, I just realized I didn't draw light hair in graphite in a long time... If I recall... I would lightly draw the strands and shade afterwards. It takes practice to make the hair look natural. i don't think I've really gotten to that level yet, but I keep trying! Study the way hair strands fall in the reference pictures.
Again, you just have to experiment to see what works for you. :]
