Description Taken at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium

These are Caribbean Flamingos and they were brilliant hues of salmon/pink in the sun. They were all running the tops of their bills along the surface of the water and walking forward; I'm not sure what they were doing but it was mesmerizing to look at.

This one was just lowering its head to do just that.

Taking a camera to a zoo is always a good plan--and you take such artistic shots! I actually really like the paleness of this shot, far more golden than pink due to the light.

I actually never leave my home without my camera--17 pound camera bag and tripod in total! This was one of those shots that I didn't know exactly what I was doing yet but I knew it was right instinctively, but it works out because when these things happen it helps me to learn in order to do them deliberately next time!

Thanks so much! This is one I'm still insanely proud of, even as it's one of my older and more amateur shots!

Thank you! I do too, it's always so interesting how it bends in all those directions.

Great photo!

Their necks are so strange...isn't it amazing how they can bend them so?

Thank you!! Oh yes, their bendy necks are so amazing! Along with their legs where their "knee" is close to the bottom of their foot and that they bring one up to help with heating their body since the blood pumps down through them.

Oh, that is very interesting. I din't know that. I wondered why they balanced on one leg like that so much...

Years ago I heard on an animal show that flamingos' pink coloring is because of their diet of shrimp. That's another funny fact about them!

Yep and in some areas also algae! When flamingos are born, they're white and start developing that pink-salmony color.

Too much time on Animal Planet and a compulsive desire to look stuff up and research things after I've taken the photos.

Promised critique:
Amazing capture. Very nice job pulling the camera out and getting this. Excellent shot.

That being said, I have a few points to make. First, look in my signature - ISO 400? Whyyyy??? (Sorry -_-). You were in broad daylight and were able to use an aperture of 5.6. There was no reason to use an ISO that fast. It made your shot a lot grainier than it needed to be. It's not terribly grainy, but I think a lower ISO (100 or less, perhaps) would have made it much, much better.

Now that I've had my little ISO rant (don't feel bad - I do that a lot), I'll go back to good stuff. Outstanding shot. I may even this one. Very, very nicely done.

LOL Yes, the ISO...I'm usually very conscious about it and my only excuse was it was getting to the end of the day and I was incredibly hot and not thinking entirely clear. Most times I like to shoot at ISO100 at the zoos to eliminate that even slight grain unless I've gotten a cloudy day and need the extra speed. So you are perfectly right, there's not an excuse for the ISO400!

My camera is permanently set on ISO 64
I only use higher as an absolute last resort.

Thank you! This is one where I didn't rely on post-processing cropping to get this photo and it makes me all the more proud to have achieved this!

that's awesome! I had assumed that this was cropped in, so if you pulled that off in camera "Bravo" to you.

I did that silent "Oooh, oooooh! OOOOOH!" and whipped up my camera as he lowered his head so it framed perfectly and then I did a little pleased body wiggle. Thank god there were tons of excited kids around to help mask my own silliness.
