Blurring them usually works for me... You can add a great sense of depth that way, I also usually play with the brush modes, especially with the overlay and intense light ones. You can also try to add some blurred foreground elements, such as plants or rocks, to make the composition more realistic. I often use the grain filter too, to give a more movie-like feel to it. Once you have the bg, link all the layers together and play with the contrast/colors. That's what I generally do.
