As the founder of a group the does give honest opinions and mini critiques to help our artist grow, by you asking me to give you a critique am taking it that is the purpose behind the request other then the usual critiques people desire that tells you how good it is. Every thing that is said are things that possibly could enhance the picture as is not made in Malice. Some of your other critiques say they love the lighting. Since it is not in your description can only guess you were going for a dramatic lighting. But lets put our attention to the background. Your picture would have been much more dramatic if you would have used a larger aperture such as f2.8. This would have thrown the background out of focus drawing more attention to you the model. If am right, the cannon can be shot manually or programmed, this would have given a darker background while still giving a hint of the artwork on it.

Personally think better use of the colored lights would have added dramanic effects other then letting it glance off your arms, this pulls attention to your arms and away from the main subject, the same with the light flare, though many people love the flare. As a former professional glamour photographer, such tricks don't do anything for me. But as said it is a personal taste.

Who ever did your make up did a good job or else your skill in photoshop is good, can't find one skin flaw. Really wish knew what look you were going for, that would help greatly. Dramatic lighting usually works real good when there are skin blemishes to expose so to give that rugged look. Apparently you weren't going for the rugged look, but more of an in crowd look, still the lighting does work as it gives deep shadows. It is a good exposure, anymore light and you would have lost your blond hair in your face, and less light you would have thrown your coat into darkness, so like said, the camera gave you a good ballance.

What the high contrast light seems to have done, and don't think you noticed is around the nostrils of the nose, it has done something that am not sure what. If this was 3D would know instantly what it is, but this is not 3d. What am talking about, the shadow beneath your nose is creeping up above your nose, giving a false impression that something is wrong, kind of as if another nose was imprinted over the bottom. This is the only way know to explain it. Sorry for lack of english.

Also as mentioned above the lighting works in many aspects. Blond hair at places become close to the same plane as the skin, color wise and doesn't seem to give the same deep shadows as the rest of the image. Could just be my eyes, they not as good as they once were. The lighting does give you the slender look in the face and does seem to make your chin more square, as it should.

As mentioned above, this is only a personal opinion. Over all the question is, is it what you wanted. If that answer is yes, then you succeeded. There is no way the viewer can tell what the artist is going for without it written in the description. in a way it has an anime appeal.

I'm a far cry from being an art critic, but I'm gonna give this a shot because it's what you do when people ask you to analyze their work. Brace yourselves for Sir Robert Goldengate's Formal Analysis #1.

I would say this is a successfully attention-grabbing confluence of contrast between warm and cool colors and light. First of all, using trees in the background creates a feeling of abrupt seasonal transitions when the lush, summer-like green fades into the ghastly, foreboding blue of winter, which I find to be seasonally appropriate given when this pic was posted. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=" (Wink)"/> Anyway, second, the light on the hair adds to this whole expressive image of seasonal transitions because, to me, it's like the sun, which doesn't move but oversees the shifting of seasons and time. Overall, I think this image does well in expressing the cyclical movements of seasons and how such cycles are reflected in man, who can be like free-spirited summer in youth but like bitter winter in old age.

Let's start off with the good points. The lighting on the top and the bottom is very appealing. The white light really draws the attention to your face and head, while the dark around the edges and bottom provides a nice contrast. The blue light on the side is very nice, adding what looks like night, but I'm not so sure about the yellow light on the left. It doesn't seem to resemble yellow, rather a greenish color. I personally think it clashes with the nighttime feel this photographs gives off. The trees in the background are also a neat touch, giving a woodsy feel to the pic. I know I'm no photo expert, but I can clearly see that this is a high quality picture that looks very professional. Other than the yellow-green light from the left, I'd say this is an overall great picture in the photography department. Thank you for asking me for input on this, and I hope you have a great day!

First I will say the I am just a poor amateur picture taker, so if I do not make sense it because I do not know what I am doing. And for god's sake do not take me to seriously!
Okay. At first glance I was not crazy about this shot. I was reminded to much of a mug shot. Maybe my mug shot from long, long ago. In a galaxy far far away.
However I went back and really looked. Glad I did.
First the face. Outstanding focus on the subject with a interesting use of light and shadow. A interesting face. A face that might grow up to be special. I also liked the halo framing of the hair around the subjects face.
Overall texture and detail is good. The subject could be just the other side of the room. I especially liked the texture and "feel" of the cloth of the shirt. Once again a good use of lighting.
I am ambivalent about the background. Really do not know what to say here. I think maybe a more neutral backing while keeping the color and focus fade to both sides might have been better. However it is minor and what the hell do I know anyway!
Overall this is a fine piece of work.
With respect,
Herb

I just do photography as a hobby, but in my opinion the colors and lighting brings a lot to the photo.
It really makes the photo have emotion.
The shadows are bringing depth and perception.
I enjoy how your face is illuminated and the shadows make a sharp contrast with it, so it brings out your eyes. It all makes it very smooth in the transitions from the shadows to the light areas.
I like the different colors used on either side of you because I see representation of light vs dark and I think everyone is always battling with the darkness in them.
I would say maybe if you edit the photo, to try to make the shadows even sharper because I think it will add even more depth, and even if you have a black background, it would make the photo pop more, or even just have one color, say the purple, as the total background color would make it interesting.
I enjoy this photo though, it's definitely an eye-catcher for me.
Continue to keep up the good work!

Remember I'm not a professional

Okay so the lightings great I like that you added different colors so its not to solemn and boring as it would be with no color. I like the mood you set with the background to the lighting and your outfit! I like where you place the lighting ,where you place the light really matters! And in my opinion your placement is spot on so good job! I've also seen a few works Like this so its not too original. I mean you could have added more light in a few places but its very good the way it is!!

Simply amazing. The lighting was done very well, and the shade gives many different levels of colors. The angles are just perfect, the black background used is the best choice for making accurate lighting effects for these kind of kind of photos. I especially like the three lightings (white, blue, and green) used here for the lighting impact.
I'm not a professional in photography, but I can tell how much technique the artist got, and the most important part of any art work is the touch of the artist, because it is that one thing which gives the art originality and uniqueness.
In short, perfectly taken shot.

The lighting has an amazing effect on the overall feel of the picture, i really like it e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> the blue in your eyes stands out a lot to, they're have a cool vibrant look to them.
I believe its very original to you and your style witch by the way I love, its so awesome :3

I like the purple and yellow lights at either side of you, they give an original vibe that I love and the fact you used two different lights is interesting, I'm a fan of the idea because as I said, it's original and super cool

First of all, I think the wardrobe and tattoo is perfect. The pose is also great, looks like a pro pose. The light is bright in some areas, dark in others, giving the picture dimension. I like how the background also has two opposites, blue and yellow which balance the photo more. I love the highlight of purple on the tattoo and faintly seen over the right side of the jacket. The shot is crisp and sharp, easy to define lines and see the texture. It must have taken some planning, but its a great picture with lots of thought and consideration! ^^

I'm no expert, but this seems good to me! I like the lighting, and it isn't something I see everyday, which is great, because I get bored very easily! I don't know about the trees in the background, I like them but, they throw you off focus a little. Like I said, this isnt my thing, but color coordinating is and I like the colors, though, maybe green instead of yellow? I've always felt green and blue go hand in hand. I think you might want to make it pop a little more go out to your audience! All in all, good job.

Oh my god this is so cool! I don't know what to say about this. This is so nice and the shading is fantastic! I love it to death, especially since it is something that I don't usually like. But this takes the cake out of everything I've seen e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> the background would need some work though, because it seems a little plain. However, it's refreshing to know that this is so well done.

I can't wait to see what else you can come up with. I look forward to more of these kinds of pictures from you! Have a good day ^^

(In all honesty, I have no idea on photography so the things I may write about will be fairly unhelpful so here it goes...)
First, this is really well executed. The photo definitely has impact and is very eye catching. The contrast brought by the lighting is really nice since its brings out the details of your clothing and those veins on your skin. The yellow and blue light from the side is really beautiful, it adds to the overall "drama" of the image. The lighting in the face also creates that butterfly effect and it has that glamour.I love the "strength" of the neck but the face is a bit foreshortened because of the this angle, perhaps; but if that is the style that you want to achieve then great job. Overall, this is a very appealing and striking photo.

I like the picture and pose a lot. I'm not too sure about the colours of the light effects on each side though. Maybe a dark red would have been better than the purple? The light shining down on you is great, brings a lot of attention to your face. For something even more dramatic you could try deeper shadows!

I love the contrast of lighting. It looks great. At first, we look at the eyes, because they're blue and they come out. Your hair is so cool! In the background we can see on the left a green light and on the right a blue light. With the trees, it's like you emerge from a forest. It seems strange and it's why this photo is a sucess. Okay I don't understand much about photography or lighting but: at first glance I am drawn to the left side where the lighting is creating a sort of "glow". I have to say though that the light almost makes you appear unreal, like a character and not like a real person. I hope that made sense?

The picture is well done. The lighting looks very professional. The purple and green help create depth to the piece and the deep shadows from the overhead light. The weak point I would have to say is the background. It looks good at a glance giving it a feel of the outdoors. However on closer inspection it looks like a photoshop tree that was posted over and over. However since it is not the focus of the piece it does not really detract from the aesthetic overall.

Being truthfully honest here.

The lighting in this shot definitlely captures a more serious side to you.
And it's an interesting touch of light and dark. The light states "This is me, and i'm proud of it".

But all in all the lighting really works well with you in this image.

I'm not much of a photographer, but I'll do my best. I think that your attitude is captured perfectly in this shot. I like the background, and I like the light reflecting from the smoke as it gives some unique character to the shot. Yet I'm unsure about the light effect on the left. I feel like it should come across the whole portrait rather than cut off one arm. Although I still like the effect, I am just unsure whether the most visible part of the glare should be so thin and short. The lighting behind is great, and it might help to clear the foreground so that you pop out more.

Still, overall I love it. The clothing and pose make your portrait seem iconic and cool, and the two colors reflecting on both sides is very appealing. Great shot!
