Description
'Mountain Type.'
The main reason why I love collecting these vintage railroad photos, is wherewe look in the past of the greatest steam excursions done by the most wonderful steam locomotives and their crew, 1522 was built in 1926 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, these Mountain Types were used on the Frisco freight, passenger, and even some local freights. Sadly, the Frisco beginning to replace their steamers with diesel locomotives in the late 1940s, and retiring 1522 in 1951 and donated to the Museum of Transportation.
In 1985, a newly formed non-profit organization, The St. Louis Steam Train Association, selected the locomotive for restoration to operational condition, and the engine was restored on April of 1988. The Mountain Type would make many excursions throughout the 14 year career that this engine has operated, like the NRHS Conventions of 1990 and 1994, but sadly those 14 years has come to the end.
With the engine needed a 15 year rebuild by the beginning of the 2002 and with an expensive rebuild, the St. Louis Steam Train Association decided to retired the 1522, and operate the a special farewell excursions on September 28 and 29 of that year. 1522 is on display at the Museum of Transportation, where visitors could see the 4-8-2.
