“I don’t believe in Heroes”
Chapter One

“Mama, Mama! Look,” a young girl with jet black hair ran across the school yard with a card in her hands, running towards her mother,” Look what I made for Papa!” The girl smiled even bigger when her Mother smiled back at her;” You made that for him, all by yourself?” Her mother breathed a sigh, still smiling.” You’ve gotten his sense of creativity haven’t you, Toby?” Her mother’s face seemed serine, calm. “Ok Mama, can we go home now?” Toby went to reach for her Mom’s hand but her Mom had vanished, she was gone! “Mama?!” She shrieked and looked around frantically, searching for her mother. She turned around and saw a man standing in the shadows, glaring at her. “Look what you did,” The man spoke,” You scared your mama away, all because of those powers you have.” Toby’s small eyes widened, no one knew about her powers except her Mom and Dad. “What did you do with my Mama?” She screamed, tears streaking down her face. The man sighed and took a step forward, Toby looked around everyone else had vanished too! No teachers, no students, no mama…

Toby shot up, out of bed, in a cold sweat. She gritted her teeth and looked at her alarm clock, it read: 4:35a.m. She groaned and laid back down, rubbing her eyes, this was the third time she’s had that dream. She was pretty much fed up with it now. Yes she missed her mother, but no she didn’t want to be reminded of it every night. “Might as well get ready for my interview," She grumbled and sat up,” at the hospital.”

It only took Toby a few minutes to get ready for “work”, as her older brother called it. Working at a hospital wasn’t work for Toby; she felt privileged to be able to help other people. Hopefully she’d be a doctor, but a nurse would be OK. “I don’t like being a nurse,” she said to herself,” people always say Doctors are supposed to be men, nurses are supposed to be women.” She rolled her eyes as she looked around the kitchen, searching for something to eat. “Toki, Tokinue! Come get your breakfast.” She called to her pet parrot. “Coming! Coming!” the bird squawked, as Toby poured some bird food and water into two containers hanging off a wall. “Behave ok? I’m going for an interview; make sure no one comes in.” She talked to the bird as if it were human. “Oki oki!”Toki said in reply as Toby left the apartment, locking the door behind her.

The cab ride to work was quite boring, plus the driver was playing 80’s music. Once the cab stopped Toby gave the driver a ten and said, “Keep the change, thanks for the ride!” The driver gawked for a second than drove off. “Life in New York city my dear friend is very harsh. Let me give you a hand.” She murmured under her breath as she entered the hospital.

Toby took a step into the hospital; it felt strange to walk into a hospital after her mother’s death, this is where she died. ‘New York City October 13th at midnight,’ She thought as she casually walked up to the front desk, ‘She died, in this hospital…’ The women at the desk looked up and smile kindly,” Well hello, you must be Tobikuma?” Toby could tell that the women struggled pronouncing it right and laughed. “Call me Toby and yes I am.” She said as she the women nodded and laughed a bit too,” Well I’m Trita Trenton, its nice meeting you.” Toby nodded and looked around,” So who am I suppose to work with?” She asked. “Oh you can either work with Mr.Petrelli or Mr.McFoulen.”Trita said as the phone at the desk started ringing. She answered it and nodded a few times saying things like,”Yeah.” and “Sure.” She nodded and hung up, smiling. “Oh Mr.Petrelli is requesting some help, you should go help him,” She said,” He’s pretty good looking, wish you luck!” She gave me a smile as the heat rose in my face. “Ok, bye. Wait, where is he?” Toby asked dumbly. Trita sighed and shook her head and said,” Go straight down the hall and turn right.”
