Description Katajjaq: An Inuit Rhythm Game

Traditionally played by women, this game (as far as I can tell, the Inuit don't classify it so much as a musical art, persay, as like a game of rhythmic skill...a more impressive and elaborate game of pattycake played with the vocal cords instead of the hands) consists of one player establishing a pattern of sounds which the other player must mirror back at her as closely as possible without faltering. Like pattycake, there are particular traditional songs and patterns that can be used; many of them imitate a particular sound, like sled runners on snow or a saw cutting wood.

Partnership and competition both play a part in this game. A really good session takes off with a joyful sort of rhythm, and seasoned partners can keep a volley of sound going for minutes at a time like skilled tennis players, but partners will often change up the sounds or the beat to try and throw each other off. Both players keep it up until one or the other loses the rhythm or cracks up laughing--one slip and the whole fast-paced game crashes to a halt. An excellent way to stay occupied and warm during the long winter months...

Now, I don't know about you guys, but I can't imagine our girl Katara coming all the way to the North Pole and making friends with a princess there, without having at least one katajjaq shakedown. After all, she's sort of a princess herself...

Southern Water Tribe, represent!

Katajjaq sounds like a lot of fun, and I always like seeing cultural references in AtLA art.

Me, too! The cultural research they did can always use a little more love, imo.

This is really neat - gorgeous art, and educational, too. Real-life cultural touches are part of what makes AtLA such a fantastic show, and I can definitely imagine something like this happening onscreen.

It seems they did bond in the episodes in the North Pole. I can see them playing this game. They both look so sweet. Ah I love Yue. I definitely appreciate the cultural research you did too. I hoping to write a series of essays about Avatar Anthropology. I just love this piece in all ways. Great work

Yeah, who'd have thought, right? Though actually, really old-fashioned katajjaq looks almost like kissing, the mouths are held so close together.

TobuIshi In reply to tampopou [2008-10-27 00:50:01 +0000 UTC]

Dude, I bet! Have you ever done it? I'd love to try, but I'm A) pastier than cheap flour, and B) have no access to anyone who could teach me...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tampopou In reply to TobuIshi [2008-10-27 02:43:31 +0000 UTC]

I tried to learn it once, but i failed horribly. On youtube you might be able to find a tutorial.

TobuIshi In reply to tampopou [2008-10-27 02:49:03 +0000 UTC]

Did you have a partner to practice with? Most of the group vocal arts kinda require a live teacher and a practice buddy if you're going to get anywhere. Maybe once I'm resettled in the Northwest I can find a teacher...

tampopou In reply to TobuIshi [2008-10-27 04:13:59 +0000 UTC]

No, i just tried to self-teach off youtube and stuff like that. Best place to learn, unfortunately, is probably Nunavut, unless you find someone of Inuit descent here on the westcoast...though I did hear people speaking Inuktitut the other day.

TobuIshi In reply to SarcasticLeaves [2008-10-27 00:51:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was fun to watch them spending time together. I think losing her was pretty dreadful for Katara, though naturally it was worse for Sokka and that was what mostly got the focus. If you watch her face in the ascension scenes...

(The background is horribly scribbly but I'm glad you like it. )

Ooooo, this is cool! I can imagine Katara getting mad competitive. And her being outclassed by Yue's formal singing training. LOL!
This is awesome all around. Love the lines, love the colours, love the concept!

TobuIshi In reply to Satori-Blackthorn [2008-10-27 00:53:48 +0000 UTC]

Hah, Katara was probably trained by Kanna and the women of her tribe--she's not losing out to a bunch of formal fancy-schmancy practice!

I'm glad you like it! I went for a high saturation and brightness on the colors, since they're playing outside in a snowy area...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Satori-Blackthorn In reply to TobuIshi [2008-10-27 23:09:00 +0000 UTC]

Lol, good point. And Katara would hate to lose anyway... And Kanna is simply made of awesomeness!
Snow has a tendency to be very bright, (go figure eh?) and you've captured it well, without having it too overpowering, which is awesome.

TobuIshi In reply to Satori-Blackthorn [2008-10-28 04:21:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! We get five feet of snow for most of the winter here, so I've had some time to observe its effects.

Satori-Blackthorn In reply to TobuIshi [2008-10-28 12:09:02 +0000 UTC]

That is a lot of snow!!! We might get that much over the course of the whole winter, at one time the most we'll have is like 2 feet.
But I loooooove winter, and I'm mad jealous of all your snow!!
