Looked at the 2008 version, wondered how it possibly could be improved, then looked at the 2012 one.
Both are very good! The 2008 has a very nice sketch effect, but the 2012 looks more...polished (different styles, too). I prefer the 2012's expression and face shading and hair, and yes, the background.

I also agree there are good things on both.. the new one is more "updated" I guess haha, the drawing style changed the most. Thanks so much!
