“I only try,” Ista teased before turning serious. “I had to live alone for a while out here and learned to stay prepared, even if it’s a trip as short as to town and back.” She clambered up onto Aeronwy’s back, hoisting herself upward as she gripped the leather horn of the saddle, saddlebags swaying as she did so. “And it’s not a bother, I learned a few tricks way back when. They are not the most pleasant ways to make a great pelt, but they turn the skin soft and keep the fur from damage. You could even use it for a blanket if you got cold enough.”

“You’ll get a few more holes in your nose with your attitude.” Aeronwy glanced bitterly at Sans, watching Johnny on his back in a cautious manner. She waited for Ista to get situated in the seat before she began to turn around, mud clumping precariously in the fur on the back of her legs. “The Great Papyrus can enlighten me with more adventures when we get back to camp if he so chooses just as long as he doesn’t scare off the goats tomorrow.”

“Aeronwy, sometimes I don’t think you get out enough.” Nina rolled her eyes, moving her paws until she was comfortable in her own skin again. Her silver tail remained tucked as she stayed in her spot, waiting to take up the tail end of the caravan.

“Whenever you’re ready.” Ista grinned. “It’s just over yonder, you’ll know we’re there when you see the ice fishing house thing on a tug sled.”

Johnny stroked the pelt again. “You act as if it isn’t a big deal but you are really special to survive up here alone. I admire that.” He looked up as she mounted. “I would love to learn how you do the hides. I don’t think I have ever felt one so soft.” He said. He usually didn’t hunt his own things, he prefered wild veggies of fruits as he was sort of more on the hippie side, however, he never refused a good deer hide blanket or clothing. He just prefer not to do the killing. Sans glanced back at him briefly.

“Easy there, Tiger. Let’s not get creepy on her and ruin our chance.” The dire said. Johnny blushed slightly and Sans shook his head before devoting his attention back towards Aerowny. He began to follow after her, stewing over her comment. “Leave a few holes in your nose.” He mumbled under his breath in a mocking tone.

Papyrus leaped happily next to Nina as they walked and in front of Sans where he continued to jump in and out of his place. His tail was wagging with excitement. 1: She had called him The Great Papyrus, 2: She wanted to hear his stories. Now he just had to wait to get back to the camp so that he could tell her his stories when Sans couldn’t hear.

Johnny nodded at her instructions and held tightly onto Sans, he felt that if he fell off now, his head would pretty much just explode. He smiled as he watched Papyrus’  reaction to Aeronwy’s words. Sure enough, her camp came into sight and it was just as she had said. Sans quickly warned Papyrus to stay in line when the male saw the camp so that he didn’t bolt over to it and destroy something he shouldn’t.

“I can show you tomorrow as long as they bring something in. Aeronwy’s got a good eye for hunting.” Ista smiled, patting Aeronwy’s neck. “There are plenty more at the ranch, so feel free to keep it. I always make sure to tan pelts for when dire times come around.” She rode towards the front of their small caravan, the clumps of mud drying in Aeronwy’s fur and breaking into smaller pieces. She did not mind preserving herds of prey when it came to hunting, but poaching was on another level to her, almost as if it were sinful yet she wasn’t particularly religious.

“You’ll just lose your supper,” Aeronwy chuffed, watching Papyrus in the corner of her vision. She really meant it for Sans, as she really didn’t take to attitude well, similar to her handler. Oh if Ista could understand him! She shook her head, striding at a loose gait until she was beside the hut in which Ista had slept the night before with Nina close behind. She had given up on the thought, allowing it to fester at a later time. The silver tokota gave the dire males a wide personal space bubble, keeping her distance to avoid being snapped at.

“I hope Ista made sure to bring caribou sausages.” The thought made Nina’s mouth water, and she watched her human companion intensely as she clambered down from the dominant female’s back.

“Welcome to the FOB, or forward-operating-base.” Ista looked at Johnny before she went to unlock the small door that led into the sledded hut. It wasn’t much taller than the dires, but it was large enough for a few sleeping bags as long as one knew how to maneuver within it. There was a small storage area that could be accessed from below what would have been where the inside floor sat. Outside, there was a smoldered fire pit that was ringed with large flat stones and a large tanning rack attached onto the side of the small “building” that looked as if it were longing to be used, empty and dry. One could only hope that there was dry firewood somewhere in case they ever needed that fire. “I promise that we don’t live in this thing all year,” Ista joked, pushing open the door to make sure that it still worked. At least the ground was drier here.

Keeping focused on what Sans was doing, as he was slightly unbalanced because of the rider, he answered, “I would really love that. If it wouldn’t be too much trouble.” He glanced to the dire to make sure that he didn’t protest, but the sphinx could care less. For all he cared, Johnny could live the rest of his days here as long as him and Papyrus could get something to eat… but at the same time, he didn’t want Aeronwy to have the boy now. “Really, you would let me keep it?” He said excitedly. “You’re way too nice.”

Papyrus watched Nina as she watched her handler, growing curious of why she had become more intent to watch her. Johnny glanced to Papyrus to make sure that he wasn’t going to do anything stupid before he carefully slid of the sphinx’s side. He took a while to slide off as he didn’t really want to land hard and hurt something, which caused the dire to nearly lose his balance and fall on the kid. Sans gave him a look once he was on the ground.

“Sorry.” Johnny told him sheepishly before he shuffled around him and closer to Ista and Aeronwy where he found more comfort than being with the dires. “Wow, you really prepare for your camps.” He said as he looked around at everything, petting Nina’s muzzle if she allowed him. Though the camp appeared empty and unlived in for a while, Johnny thought that it seemed full of life and human essence. This place held busy activity at some times as it made him happy to be standing in the middle of it.

He looked back to Ista and approached her. “Your Tokotas must really trust you to just hang around outside when you stay here.” He stated as he looked back at the females. It wasn’t often that he met a group of Tokotas who would hang around with their handlers even when they had only been off of their backs for a few minutes.

“It’s only Tokotnan hospitality,” Ista joked. “I don’t see many people out here, or ever to be fair. My girls are respecting enough to understand that they shouldn’t go anywhere that they could get into trouble, and Aeronwy keeps whichever tokota I bring out with me in line when I go to bed.” She shrugged, leaving the door open for Johnny in case he wanted to go inside. Aeronwy laid down on the dead, yellow grass, folding her forelimbs underneath her as she waited patiently. “I’ve got to pull the food supplies out of the trees, I’ll be back in a second.” Ista reached just inside the doorway, pulling her arm back with a rifle that seemed ancient compared to her before she checked to see if it was loaded. Then, she snapped the safety back on and put it over her shoulder. “Feel free to stay here, I’ll be taking Nina with me to carry everything. I can’t keep the food here in case of bears.” She shrugged, looking between Johnny and his dire companions.

“Listen to Aeronwy,” Nina glanced at Sans and Papyrus, warning them. Aeronwy looked as if a giant cat, cleaning the mud out of her fur and keeping her forepaws curled into her mane. Her white, piebald fur was still dusty where the dried mud was, but no longer had mats within it. She seemed like a calmed tempest, but it did not matter when she looked up at Ista and tilted her head.

“Stay safe,” Aeronwy whined, flattening her ears and laying her head on the ground as she watched Ista while she got ready to go get the food supplies that were a few trees into the forest, away from camp to avoid bears.

Johnny nodded to her. After all he supposed she was right. There was a lot of people who would do the same if they had the ability or were in the right place, didn’t make him any less grateful towards her though. “I can see that.” He said as he looked back to Aeronwy. She had already put Sans in his place for sure and if she could do that to that large sassy dire, she could fair well with anyone. Johnny nodded and accepted Ista’s invite inside. He wanted to travel with her to help, but he wasn’t really sure he would be able to make the trip up the mountains and one more minute on the lumbering giant, Sans.

Papyrus jumped when she snapped the riffle. It wouldn’t have been the first time either of the brothers had been shot at as they had scoured the country houses for trash food. “I’ll take you up on that offer if you don’t mind.” He said a little sheepishly as he did. It was fairly easy to make the cozy little structure home and Johnny immediately felt like he could relax in a place safe from Sans.

Sans listened to Nina’s warning and he briefly followed the movement of her and Ista as they left the camp before he turned his attention back to Aeronwy and watched her quietly as he began to evaluate whether or not he could take her down. Papyrus had made himself at home as he flopped down next to the hut and began to sniff through the dead grass.

Johnny sat at the open door of the small home and began to stare into the woods. Wondering to himself what was going to happen next. He turned his attention to Aeronwy. “You’re the alpha out here, aren’t you?” He asked her in a soft voice. It was raised a slight octave, but not in too much of a childish tone to embarasse or patronize her, but rather to get her attention and show affection. He extended his arm and began to coo and whistle softly to try and get her to come over to him. Sans watched him for a moment with a careful eye, but eventually found his own laying spot where he began to groom his thin coat.
