We don't know basically anything of the Beforus ancestors. Which means: Free real estate!

This is the Harrower, also known as the Archmage, the Ancestor of Cronus Ampora. His role was to oversee the Harrows, a trial of maturity which determined whether a troll was fit for adult life of their own or whether they were supposed to be culled, and also to protect Beforus from external threats.

Cronus was meant to defeat and kill him during his Harrow and take up the mantle as the next Harrower Archmage. The Harrower, aware of the prophecy, struck Cronus with a powerful spell when he was just a wiggler. The spell failed (or perhaps acted as designed) and rather than killing Cronus it only gave him two small scars on his forehead and shattered the Harrower's essence into seven fragments.

Some claim that the Harrower attempted to kill Cronus out of fear of losing his own life and position, others think that he wanted to pass on his unfulfilling cruel duties to his successor as quickly as possible.
