Description Diplocaulus was a bizarre amphibian with a boomerang shaped head that inhabited the rivers of what is now North America during the Permian Period. The name Diplocaulus translates to Double Caul. Because it had weak limbs and a relatively short tail, it supposedly swam up and down like a whale or a dolphin.
