West Virginia in 2120 is not a pleasant place to be. Whereas Detroit became a robotics capital and sored to become the 22nd century metropolis of fine living it is today, West Virginia never really survived, refusing to change from a coal based industry in a world where Talaran crystals from Zayke power almost everything from cars to factories. This was bad news for Zoe and her childhood. Zoe's family were coal miners for generations and the great coal mine catastrophe of 2101 devastated them. Her father became impoverished and soon died of diseases that should have been curable, but he was denied healthcare due to mass privatization. Her mother soon disappeared and was never discovered. She was raised by her sleezy uncle who forced her into sexual slavery at age thirteen. She would spend her days locked in her room throwing tantrums when she wasn't being abused. One day She killed her uncle in cold blood and hid his body in an abandoned mine. She was captured by a seedy scientist agency who experimented on her and by Age 18 she had her right arm forcibly removed. As soon as she broke free she upgraded herself with cyborg tech retaining information in her newly computerized brain. She replaced her arm with a powerful versatile artificial one and killed her way to freedom leaving exploded corridors and gigantic blood splotches in her wake.

She found herself in the unforgiving world of West Virginia, one of the most dangerous places on Earth, and it didn't contain a single major city. She found mines infested with aliens, crime gangs more powerful than the state government which was gutted into uselessness. Police forces only cared about protecting corporate assets and well to due citizens (as few as they were) and thus massive crimes were possible to get away with.
