Description Size comparison of large animals that lived between 33 million years ago and 10,000 years ago.
Upper row: Argentavis magnificens (South American giant bird of prey), Kubanochoerus gigas (large, horned pig), Platybelodon danovi (proboscid with shovel-like tusks), Stupendemys geographicus (large freshwater turtle from South America), Rhamphosuchus crassidens (giant gharial), Astrapotherium magnum (large tapir-like mammal from South America) and Sivatherium giganteum (horned okapi from India).
Middle row: Meiolania brevicollis (Australian large, horned tortoise), Epigaulus (horned, fossorial rodent), Josephoartigasia monesi (giant, capybara-like rodent), Ekorus ekakeran (African long-legged weasel), Pelorovis antiquus (long-horned buffalo), Dinofelis barlowi (saber-toothed cat), Ancylotherium henningi (one of the last chalicotheres, clawed mammals related to tapirs) and Quinkana fortirostrum (large terrestrial crocodile).
