From day five of Rosegarden Week on tumblr. A rough piece, but I thought the sketch was cute and wanted to add color and a hint of background. Don't look too closely at Ruby's right hand, it's awful and I didn't care quiiiite enough to fix it.Inspired by the musings of littlemisssquiggles on tumblr, which has already got me cooking up another fanfic idea in my overworked shipping trash brain.

Oscar was playing host to a millennia-old wizard who knew just about everything there was to know about Remnant. It was easy to forget that Oscar was also a 14-year-old boy who had never been off of his aunt's farm before. Ruby tried to remember it.

In this particular fic idea I'm percolating, Ruby & Oscar are captured by Cinder to be taken to Salem, and before they manage to escape, Cinder attempts to suck power out of Oscar the same way she did with Raven (seeing as Ozpin is the source of Maiden powers). It ends up having the effect of shutting Ozpin off from Oscar to the point where they can only communicate while Oscar is dreaming, so he and Ruby have to make their way across the wilds of Salem's domain, back to their friends and civilization, without Ozpin's help. But it does give Ruby and Oscar the chance to grow closer without Ozpin's interference...
Mind you, I still have two unfinished Rosegarden projects I need to focus on first, as well as a bunch of cosplays to finish, so who knows when/if I'll get around to actually writing this story.

I think that Ruby has always seen the humanity in Oscar despite his larger-than-life position and circumstances. He may be Ozma's latest vessel, but to Ruby, he has and always will be simply Oscar Pine: farm boy-turned huntsman-in-training. I'm not sure if I ship them, but they connect on a level that seems just pure enough to work.
