The sky had begun darkening, the sound of stomach groaning and lionesses complaining could be heard. It was another day with no food caught.
Vitani stayed low to the ground, sneaking up behind Kitu, in a quick burst of speed the blonde cub pounced on the darker one, sending them both tumbling across the dry ground.
"Oof! Vitani!" Kitu said, being pinned under the slightly bigger cub. "Hello to you, too." She narrowed her darker blue eyes.
"Hey." Vitani smirked. "Wanna fight?" She asked. Kitu rolled her eyes and squirmed out from under Vitani, and turned to walk away, as she normally did. But instead she turned and pounced on Vitani, pinning the blonde down for once. Vitani seemed slightly surprised. "Not bad!" She said with a laughed.
Kitu smiled and stepped off her friend. "You're so violent. Maybe we should do something other then hurt each other." She said, looking more towards the center of their lands, knowing there was a certain scruffy young lion there.
Vitani wrinkled her nose. "You're still crushing on my brother, Nuka, aren't you?: She asked, seeming grossed out, to say the least.
Kitu looked down, awkwardly scratching her front leg with her other front paw. "Oh. You know?" she asked, halfway glancing at Vitani.
Vitani scoffed and rolled her eyes. "How couldn't I? You always want to go talk to him but when you get close enough you hide behind me. You're always staring at him when we're in the den and some times you say his name in your sleep." Vitani saying this made Kitu shrink down a little, if she could have blushed, she would be as red as a tomato.
"O-Oh... I didn't know I talk in my sleep. Hehe." Kitu said, giving her best attempt to change the subject. "What else do I say?"
Vitani just rolled her eyes and started walking to where they knew Nuka was. "C'mon." She said. Vitani knew that Kitu was too young for her brother... At the moment that is. But like cubs did Kitu would get older and get bigger. Kitu believed in Nuka, Vitani knew that, and she was almost happy for that, you'd never get her to admit it but she loved her brother. If her brother and her best friend could be happy as mates when they were older then who was Vitani to stop them?
As they reached where all the others were sharp giggled could be heard. "Nuka! You'll never be a king! You'd never do as one." Dotty mocked him. Kitu's expression saddened.
"Dotty's right, you're far too scrawny and mangy." Spotty added in. Vitani and Kitu pushed through the lionesses to get to the front of the little crowd. There stood Nuka, just standing up and dusting himself off, behind him was a large rock, knowing Nuka he had stood on top of it, declaring how he she have been the chosen one, then probably slipped and fell.
"Just give it up. You'll never be anything more then a babysitter!" Scruffy said. "And a bad one at that." She added. Nuka's head lowered as a frown crossed his lips as the lionesses laughed.
Kitu let out a soft growl. "Oh shut up! All of you!" She said, she then dashed out to stand in front of Nuka.
"Oh great." Vitani sighed. She his her face in her paw, not wanting to see her friend get mocked by the adult lionesses.
"Nuka would make a great king." Kitu said. Nuka perked up slightly, though the lionesses only snickered.
"Yeah? How's that little one?" Spotty said, in quite a mocking tone, not expecting a good answer, none of them were, they all assumed she was just saying this because of the oh-so obvious crush she had on him.
Kitu gulped. "W-Well he's brave, caring, and a good leader. Every day he goes out and tried to find pray, he ventures into other's territory, risking getting murdered to try and hunt something down much bigger then him to feed the entire pride. He tries to take care of us as best he can! And when he's watching me, Vitani, and Kovu one the rare times we actually listen to him he always keeps us out of trouble." Vitani snickered, but then thought about it, it was true. When they actually listened to Nuka they never got hurt or in trouble.
"That all you got?" Digger asked. "It takes more then just that to be a king."
"No!" Kitu continued. "Nuka's smart, and fun, and reasonable. He's not greedy like lot of kings are. He'd make sure all of his lionesses were fed well." Nuka was now smiling, nodding along proudly with everything the little cub said. "And when the lionesses are pregnant I know he'd take their spot in the hunting part. We all know that." Every one nodded, they remembered when h had done that, and not just for any one, but for Kitu's mother when she joined them and later found out she was pregnant. He had also done it for Zira when she was pregnant with Vitani.
The lionesses muttered among themselves. "I suppose you have a few good points. We'll be nicer to him." Dotty said, who then turned and walked away, followed by the rest of the lionesses, including Vitani who went back to the den to sleep.
"Hey Kitu?" Nuka said, in a very soft, sweet tone. Kitu gulped and looked back at him.
"Y-Yeah?" She asked.
"Thanks." He said, leaning over to rasp his tongue over the top of her head. "If things ever get better, or I start my own pride, I'll make you my mate. I promise." He said with a kind smiled. Kitu giggled, looking down shyly. "It's getting late, we should go to the den." He said, picking Kitu up by the scruff and heading back to the den.
