Description This one was a long time coming. When I first read the novel FRANKENSTEIN over twenty years ago, I was floored, and it became one of my favorite novels ever. At that time, I was aspiring to become a comic artist, and I came up with the idea to do an illustrated version of the novel. I shared this idea with a friend of mine, and he asked if I had ever seen Bernie Wrightson's FRANKENSTEIN. I hadn't, and being familiar with Wrightson's work from Swamp Thing, I was eager to track it down. As luck would have it, the local comic book store had a copy. As I paged through, two things happened.

1. Bernie Wrightson became my favorite illustrator ever.

2. I completely abandoned the idea of trying to draw the creature myself.

Over the years, as my style improved and I gained more confidence in my art, I toyed with the idea of trying my hand at illustrating the book again. Once I got close, but a small press publisher put out another illustrated version by one of my favorite illustrators, Glenn Chadborne. During this time, I came up with the idea of writing a story in which a young woman discovers who she thinks is the Monster living in the wilderness by her cabin. Perhaps instead of illustrating the classic, I would continue the story in a more contemporary setting and illustrate that?

Having finally got the urge back to draw after a lengthy bout of "artist's block", I decided it was time to have some fun and do some "just for me" work. I've begun the story about the young, depressed, lonely woman moving to a family cabin in the woods and discovering the mysterious giant lurks in the surrounding wilderness. After several sketches in which I tried to capture what my creature will look like (I'm considering posting the sketches with notes in my scraps), I was ready to finally try my hand at my favorite "monster" of all time.

I am NO Bernie Wrightson, but I'm happy enough with my style to give this one a shot.

This is the first illustration in what I hope will be a series. I will reveal a bit more of him each time. In this image, the creature is obviously caught out doing some logging (I have an illustration of his home, a deserted mining village, planned).

And, if you actually got all the way through this boring explanation, thank you!

For the second illustration in this series, please see the thumbnail below.

Excellent piece. Have you ever heard of Franklin Booth? He was a MAJOR influence on Wrightson's work on Frankenstein and definitely worth studying for his pen & ink work...

Thank you very much! And I sure do! His work is amazing, especially considering how close he got his ink to looking like woodcuts.Β

Thanks again!

Man, thank you so much...really. I started taking the drawing/illustration thing seriously about 8 years ago after a long, ten year hiatus from art. The reason why they are so detailed is that I used to have a horrible time with anatomy and composition and I found that if I just made things really detailed, people didn't seem to notice as much.

Thanks again!

Oh man, those details are just incredible. The whole page is used to capture the scene and the little bumps and marks onΒ  the creature give it a rather grotesque look.
