I see a cherry tree on an island just barely big enough to hold it. Β The much larger trees in the background do not appear to be cherry trees. Β There are steps leading up to the cherry tree, and those steps appear to be manmade.
Those three circumstances together give me the sense of a tree that was planted on a special site as some sort of memorial.
The shafts of light give almost a cathedral sense.
I really like the use of muted background space in this work.

The tree was alone.
But it wasn't lonely, the only one of its kind.Β Surrounding it was a forest of other trees, all friends with sturdy trucks and colorful leaves, always chatting with the lone tree in their midst.Β They spoke of rumors and happenings, who had a new seedling by their roots and whose trunk had finally fallen.Β They spoke of the strange creatures and landscapes the edge-most trees of the forest saw, and, as they grew taller while the lone tree stayed small, they courteously spoke of what they noticed above them.Β The tree missed it sometimes, the flocks of geese on its pond, the endless stars above, but hatt wasn't too bad.Β Just one more thing to ask about, and so they were always talking.
The hummingbirds still found the tree just fine, and the humans.Β It wondered why the humans kept coming to visit.Β They did not drink the nectar of its flowers, or eatΒ cuttings of its bark, or dig homes in its roots.Β In fact, it seemed as though the same humans rarely visited it twice, despite the ease of the steps and calmness of its pond.Β In the beginning, the humans ate its fruit, but now carefully stepped around those fallen to the ground, as if they thought new sprouts would spring in such a shady, crowded patch of dirt.Β They had taken to reaching up and bending its branches downward, not to smell the blooms or prune its forgotten twigs, but to tie something around it.Β The something would weigh its branches down, and sometimes the tree would feel heat on the underside of its branches.Β There would be something like light, but not like light-- the tree could ignore it, but the hummingbirds and summer insects were confused.Β Creatures seeking food from closed buds at night, well, that was distracting, even disturbing.Β The day after humans visited, the light-not-light would still hang from its bowed branches, and night creatures would come out of their hiding too soon, thinking the moon rested atop the pond now.Β The other trees would merely shake dismissively, having no answers for its questions about this.Β All creatures were strange, they said, and humans always had some new and bizarre way to bother with everything else.
The little tree would fall still when this was said.Β The other trees might not remember-- it was the shortest, but had grown faster than them at first-- but it was a human that had settled their seeds into the ground, tended them carefully when they were only seedlings, when there had been no established trees to grant them shelter.Β It remembered.Β The human had a Name.Β So did all the trees, for they had been given Names by that same human.Β It talked to them all the time, whispering forest wisdom in the stead of their parent trees.Β They grew strong and large, ran their roots around rocks and reached for the sun without overshadowing their fellows, because of the human's whispers.Β It knew so much of trees, for something that wasn't one itself.Β And it would visit the lone tree, crossing the pond as if water was stone, shoving stone into shapes as if it was water, raising the dirt so the lone tree would stand high, in the sunlight for just a little bit longer as the other trees grew tall.Β The human whispered to it, but some of those whispers were secrets.Β Some secrets were tales not of the present, but of the future...
...as if time were an expanseΒ like the stars or the forest, and the tree and human stood on an island in the midst of, but apart from, both.
