Well it's been ages but if I remember right, I setup the lighting with one main spotlight in the back and a red omni light to the side(this is what gives the red color). I set the spotlight to volumetric lighting and soft shadows and adjust it to what I liked. Then I created a separate render of some volumetric clouds. I took all of this to PS then put the cloud render on its own layer and set it to overlay and started brushing its out with smudge and erase, ect...
I did this in c4d r9 I think. I hope it helps.

Huh, Awesome, I mostly work in Blender 2.6x I've been thinking about doing a piece like this or even just a fractal render with as you said some volumetric lighting. thing is, it can be a particle system, constrained to the camera view angle to get consistent patterns. I'm definitely inspired by this! I'll update yah if I have any progress with what I have in mind!
