Yeah, they are African elephants. There was a volunteer standing in the viewing area who explained that African elephants both much larger and have larger Africa shaped ears. While they can be domesticated they aren't nearly as popular to keep for work as Asian elephants since their large size makes it hard to keep them fed. Part of the reason they are more endangered.
