Description Here is my submission for the sci-fi/ fantasy fusion contest. I've only entered one contest prior to this, but i had thought this contest was right up my alley. It also helped that the grand prize is a wacom tablet that I've always dreamed of owning.

For this contest i wanted to keep it very classic and stick to more cliche stereo types of fantasy and sci-fi. I was scared to go too far from the norm and not convey the concept. I also really wanted to draw a dragon and some cool mech stuff. I didn't have much time to come up with something mind bending so i figured I'd try to tell a story and capture a mood. In this case i was going for suspense. What happen to this pilot is of course up to you. Was he in battle in the skies before he crash landed or did he happen to crash land in the worst possible place.

I designed a lot of stuff for this piece, so i'll eventually post the concept designs. Originally it was one big piece but my two year old daughter decided to colaborate with me on it and i had to redo basically everything but the dragon which worked out in the end cause my redos were so much better than my original drawings. I went with a more bulky astronaut look for our hero to stray away from the hero look and go for more of just a typical military soldier or pilot but failed cause he looks more bad ass than the original design i did. Anyways I'm blabbing away because i haven't slept in 2 days so i could finish this piece. i hope you enjoy it and keep your fingers crossed so i can maybe walk away with a tablet.

Oh and i was so happy i had time to put in a fairy. i was very keen on having her when i came up with the original idea.

Tools: pen & ink, prisma markers, whiteout pen, watercolors, coffee, cigarettes and adobe photoshop 7.

What is the point of the fairy in the piece?

Because the guy in the mech armor is Peter Pan, duhhh! No seriously i don't know, just wanted to draw a fairy. Thought it be cool if she was following him around like a familiar or something. Maybe i like fairies.

Really good work. Great designs, and added points for the fairy. On the real, I wanted more dragon, though. Nonetheless, homey's about to be a snack, LOL

call me crazy, but did you get inspiration for the guy's rifle from the Nerf CS-35 Raider?
I ask because the drum magazine on the side is similar...
Awesome piece in any case

The designs of the characters and the environment are awesome; a lot of details and a lot of stuff to look at and this is always a good thing, imo.

I do have a few problems with the piece and I hate pointing them out this late in the game, but since you asked : |

I don't like how the piece just ends in the background. It looks as if you did the foreground separately from the background (and by background I mean the sky and the horizon line) and then pasted one on top the other. There's no eventual fade into the background. I can't tell if the entire scene is taking place on a cliff or on a plateau or maybe even a cave (considering the overhanging rock pieces). The colors need more depth, more shadows, especially cast ones since you have such a strong light source going on.

The other problem I have is that the action feels very static, and kind of...stuck. My first thought was that this was a battlefield and was surprised that there weren't more soldiers coming out to fight the dragon. But clearly you meant it to be a fight between the one pilot and the dragon, but the placing of the dragon and the pilot is kind of awkward in the space you have here. There's too much focus on the ship in the background which takes away from the potential drama and tension with the dragon vs the pilot. I think the themes of sci-fi and fantasy would be conveyed just fine without the ship because the pilot is "sci-fi tech" enough by himself and the dragon, well that goes without saying

Yeah i wish i would have heard that earlier, You bring up a lot of good points. Some which i can't believe i over looked, like shadows. i mean that's ridiculous. A lot could have been easily fixed but i just didn't have enough time. Nine minutes was even enough time to open the file.

I did actually render each piece separately which created a lot of problems but at the same time i can rearrange it and make the ship smaller or take it out, all together.

Wish you wrote that an hour before but nevertheless Thanks for taking the time to write it and who knows i probably would have never noticed i didn't put cast shadows in. I put all kinds of light and highlights but shadows, forget about it. Haha
