Description Yay! Some grayscale portrait practice. I've been relying on colour to make my contrast, so this was a good exercise in values. I chose Fluttershy because she has such lovely flowey hair~~~

If you're wondering how I did the hair there's a good tutorial for painting cartoon hair digitally over here!
It looks like it's super complicated but mostly it's just a lot of patience and layers.

I really would recommend anybody who wants to to try a line-less portrait like this, it's so good for your development as an artist. Really, I learned a ton from just doing this one piece, it's insane! Oh, and you don't need to have digital tools to do it either! When I was just starting out I made some with just grey pencils and a rubber. Sure, they weren't good, but they did help me learn a lot.Β
Now that I think about it, I really should do more focused studies like this. I think it'll aid my development a lot.

Oh, yes, one more thing: SHOW YOUR ART TO PEOPLE! I showed a version I thought was finished to some friends, and they really helped me see some problems with the piece. If you've got problems internalizing criticism like I do, here's what you do: write down all the points, no matter how small or silly you think they are, thank them for the feedback, then put the project aside and go do something else. Later, you can come back to it with fresh eyes and a healed ego, look at the criticisms you wrote down, and get to work fixing your piece! Trust me, this works a lot better than trying to defend your art in the heat of the moment.

I think that's all for this session of Pretending to know what I'm Doing (tm), Happy Mother's day and see ya later!
