My mom and I just got done watching DreamWorks's latest animated feature, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, on Peacock, and it was actually better than I anticipated.

I thought it was just going to be another teen movie, especially Turning Red, but thankfully it was a more bearable teen movie. It did have some similarities to Pixar's red panda film, but it was a better take of the teen genre.

The trailers seemed to imply that the crush on a human boy plot would be important, but I'm glad it was completely minor compared to the other plots. Also, it was very creative to have a reversal on the Little Mermaid fable. I mean, this is from DreamWorks, the same company who gave us Shrek, the Disney fairy tale parody we all know and love.

The animation was neat, especially with some of the Gillman characters stretching their legs like macaroni, Ruby herself is kind of cute, and great performances from the cast, including Toni Collette, Jane Fonda, and Will Forte.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Tentacles

If I had a job with more money and more interest in this, I would have paid to see this film on the big screen. I did read somewhere that this film had the influence of John Hughes's films' style. I didn't really catch it, but if anyone else would and let me know how they could tell, I'd appreciate it.
