When the project rolled around in my illustration class to build a picture made up of a repeated texture, creating a 16"x20" image entirely out of Japanese kanji seemed like the only logical thing to do. Of course. -.-;

Originally, I thought it was interesting that the kanji for "like" is made up of the kanji used for "child" and "woman." The kanji formation put me in mind of how many young girls would like to think of themselves as women, how they try to grow up too fast, and how vulnerable that can make them...

By the time I was done, though, I was thinking more about the weight we attribute to the opinions of the people that we want to like us, and how sometimes the things we like about ourselves are bound up in the approval of others...
