First of all, I want to request something from you guys
Is there any particular one of these sketches you'd like to see coloured or worked on further? Just curious as to what you guys want to see.

Second: Okay so this thing with Miss Burke and her trousers: I know, I KNOW that women did not wear trousers in the late 19th century, as in... at all.
The best they could get away with was balloon-trousers, and those are silly.
But I am going to take the liberty of putting Edith in trousers once in a while, because of her desert-adventures, which would be more practical for her to wear trousers rather than a skirt/dress.

So, as historically incorrect as it is, I will place her in trousers whenever I see fit... because I can, MWAH

Pffffrt all these sketches are such incredible joy to look at!
Ah man - I really envy your talent of drawing characters with such an ease.
You always manage to give them an unique expression, without making their general features get lost.

And Edith is just lovely, kicking ass everywhere she goes.

Thank you so much; I really want to try and catch as much as the canons looks as possible, even if I'm still far from satisfied with it.
And thanks; I'm slowly getting Edith more and more developed, but I still need to give her a proper story-arch.

haha yay! I love seeing your GMD work. did you get a name for your "miss Bell"?
Actually for a while jodpurs were a "fad" (moreso at the turn of the century) in the victorian era for women riding horses or "adventuring"

Even then it was very uncommon for women to wear trousers while riding, as cross-saddle was seen as VERY unfeminine and unladylike, unlike the more common side-saddle.
Of course women like Diane de Poitiers and Marie-Antoinette did ride cross-saddle, but they were some of the very rare exceptions.
Gertrude Bell did ride cross-saddle herself, but she had invented a skirt that did allow her such a freedom, while still keeping her feminine attire.
It was first in the beginning of the 1900 that a few actresses and female designer began to sport trousers, and even they were considered the odd people.

I am so sorry for prattling like this Sorry sorry.

And I did indeed; I'm going for Edith Burke - Edith because I like it, and Burke because I've named her after David Burke who portrayed Dr. Watson in the Granada-series, starring Jeremy Brett.

ya, i guess thats why i said more the turn of the century... and i guess it's location too, i'm thinking Canada, so wardrobe especially out west would have been quite different :T

No worries I go off on historical lectures all the time!! LOL!

oh nice!! It suits her quite lovely!!! :> and i love the homage to Brett-Holmes/Burke-Watson! Super awesome!

Actually I have no idea of what Canadian fashion would have looked like at that time - I thought of imagine either a very English-inspired style or just very... practical clothes, but to be fair - noooo idea.

And I am glad to hear ^^ I absolutely love history, but quite a lot of people can't be arsed with it - a shame really.

And thanks; I did have a long discussion with myself of whether to go with Brett, Burke or Hardwicke, but seeing as Burke was the first actor to REALLY make a respectable Watson (Hardwicke IS adorable as heck, though - geez no wonder the women falls for those two ), and thus I wanted to honour that name of his.

ya, well it's very similar to English/European fashion, it just depends on where in Canada, Like when woman moved out to the NorthWest Territories, farmer's wives or "adventurers" may have sported some sort of pants for certain situations. But that wouldve been closer to the turn of the century. I always think of the cover of this book we sell at the museum i work at [link] probably more the 20's than earlier, but I've been told/read that it was a anti-fashion? earlier than that.

Ya it is a shame, my sister gets annoyed with me really easily when i pick out historical wrongs in movies and stuff lol!

HAHA! this is true... Early Watsons were so adorable and Gentlemenly like lol! XD

Yeah, that looks more like 20-30's. But of course the rules were different from rural areas to higher societies. None the less, it was considered VERY inappropriate for women to wear trousers.
With Canada, I suppose the areas occupied or heavily influenced by the English would be more influenced by the British fashion.

But it sounds lovely, and thanks for the link - the photo is fantastic.

Ya. Well and the situation and what you were doing to, so i guess if Burke is around london she'd probably be dressed up for sure lol...

When she's in London she'd definitely have to wear dresses, according to code.
Which is why she spends most of her time out of country

I love you Eddie. *snuggles* You and Sarah must go out adventuring together! HUZZAH! Seriously, I cannot get over her design! I just...AHH I LOVE HER SO MUCH. The eyebrows are fabulous. She's so fierce and awesome and an all around amazing OC.

TopHatTurtle In reply to WingsOfASong [2013-03-25 21:04:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much
Yeah, I have a thing for thick eyebrows, because they can REALLY make it hard for a woman to feel all the more feminine... Which is what I like... To challenge the ladies

And I'd love for her and Sarah to go on adventures
What's she like? This Sarah of yours?

And thank you SO much for the kind words; I love drawing Eddie, and it makes me so much happy to know that people can find a fondness towards her.

WingsOfASong In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-03-25 21:15:17 +0000 UTC]

You are very welcome. ^^

Sarah is basically Ratigan's Adler, what with all the fierceness, the intellect, and the dubious reputation (she outwits him twice and Basil once). He tries to get her to be his housekeeper at some point, but she's having none of it. She used to own a hat shop (back then, employed ladies were a no-no), lost it due to legal issues and worked as a showgal at the Rat Trap. She wasn't too fond of the job, but it paid all right. He eventually lets her go, but the two grow a bit closer as time goes by.

TopHatTurtle In reply to WingsOfASong [2013-03-25 21:22:27 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, that sounds lovely indeed.
Yeah, the life of a woman was indeed rather tricky in terms of job-availabilities, unless one was interested in being a governess, nurse or maid. Any change of a woman wanting to have her own shop was indeed next to impossible.
Which makes this character all the more interesting.
So since she (at times) collaborates with Ratigan, what's her own moral placement; is she morally corrupted by the 'baddies', or is she a poor soul in a sad situation?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WingsOfASong In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-03-25 21:31:11 +0000 UTC]

Ratigan likes seeing her, and she at times enjoys her time with him, so I guess she is corrupted. She's also a rat, so that kind of suck for her because my Mary Sue- er- villain is in a position of power, naturally making life annoying for anyone who isn't a rat. Sarah's also not too fond of Basil, chauvinist that he is. She is a little bit fond of Dawson, though.

TopHatTurtle In reply to WingsOfASong [2013-03-25 21:44:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, that would at least be a common trait between her and Eddie, as she (obvious from the sketch I suppose) is rather fond of the little mouse, herself.

She sounds like a really interesting character indeed
Does she have any connection with your Elizabeth-character I drew, a while ago?

WingsOfASong In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-03-25 21:47:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Her bio is up if you want to take a look at her. No, Elizabeth is in an AU I am trying to write where Ratigan is the hero. Sarah comes into play after the Jubilee Job.

I think Sarah would greatly admire Eddie. Her dedication and her ambition are things to be looked up to. ^^

TopHatTurtle In reply to WingsOfASong [2013-03-25 21:50:21 +0000 UTC]

Aah I see.
Well, I still need to refine Eddie, and precisely point down her life-story, albeit I imagine I will go with a more political route for her. Make her a linguistic, working on cartography and a interpreter with Arabic as her main-focus.
Less archaeology, but just as much adventure, travelling with local Bedouin-tribes.

I absolutely love what you have of her so far, though! She's got this personality that just shines through with every drawing of her you do! ^^ And I may or may not be shipping her with Dawson on accident.

HA, I am so amazingly happy to hear that. To hear all of it.
With two OC's for this fandom, it makes me happy to know that they are already fairly-well-liked despite being so new and under-developed yet.
