Ciara's Egyptian Nightmare

She tossed and turned in her sleeping bag, huddling for warmth as the cold wind threatened to permeate the canvas walls of her tent. Her thoughts kept going back to the door they had found earlier that day, and the mysterious design that had stumped the team. Eventually they'd packed it in for the day, retreating back to camp before the sun set and the dangerous chill of the desert night set in. Even in her sleeping bag, she still fought the shivers as the silent wind fluttered the formidable canvas flaps of the tent. Her thoughts travelled to the patterned black tights that she wore on her legs inside the sleeping bag. She'd brought them for a party that was set to take place the evening after they entered the pyramid. They were yet to serve this purpose but, as Ciara Nightingale lay snoozing in her tent in the middle of a winter desert night, she was glad for the extra layer on her shapely legs....

The answer came to her with the all the sensation of being struck by lightning and none of the deadly effects. She sat bolt upright, wrapped and tangled in her thermal sleeping bag, brown eyes wide open in the darkness of the tent. The stars cast a faint glow on the ceiling of the tent, leaving the blurred impression of a canopy of constellations. That was the answer to the puzzle on the door: the stars were the key! She got her excited breathing under control as her eyes adjusted to the darkness of the tent. Fumbling with the zipper on the sleeping bag, she struggled to unwrap herself then flung it wide, squirming to crawl free from its hibernating safety. She picked around for her boots but they were nowhere to be found. The events of the evening played back in reverse as she tried to find out why they weren’t right next to her sleeping bag, but so much had happened that day, the tent was such a mess, and the darkness did not help matters any. Ciara located her backpack that contained her more personal belongings, including a pair of gold-heeled sandals. They were also meant for the party, but they would have to do for the moment. Her triumphant epiphany could not wait.

As Ciara strapped the cute golden sandals onto her stocking feet she thought back to the events leading up to this moment, beginning with the satellite images that had identified evidence of a buried, previously undiscovered pyramid deep in the Egyptian desert. Her university had funded an expedition that she had been lucky enough to accompany. They had made a great amount of progress in unearthing the vast structure, before stalling on the great entranceway that was mysteriously locked. Now Ciara was certain that she had figured out the way in and could not wait until morning to try out her theory. The answer was up there in the night sky above: the constellations.

The entire camp was sleeping and it would do no good to rouse them all (in case she turned out to be wrong). Ciara decided it best that she test out her theory first before rallying the camp unnecessarily. Hurriedly dressing in her khaki top knotted below her chest, a pair of snug fitting khaki shorts; she had considered removing her patterned black tights but decided against it. They would help cut down in the chill night winds. Indeed, she thought, they accented her long and curvy legs quite nicely beneath the desert shorts. As long as she was back before sunrise, she figured they would be comfortable on her legs.

The trek to the pyramid was longer than she expected. If the desert was a forbidding place during the day, it was certainly a spooky place at night. The full moon bathed the vast sand landscape a deep blue and everything was still and quiet. Looking up at the stars she wondered which one of them was the satellite that had discovered the buried pyramid. The world was wide open and she felt very alone in the desert at night. Each step was a struggle, as Ciara’s heeled sandals would sink into the sand. Her well-toned calves and thighs hidden beneath the patterned black tights got an unplanned workout as a sheen of sweat formed on her chiseled face, her dark pretty bangs sticking to her forehead. Before long, the arduous effort of picking her sinking feet out of the depths of the sand left her panting for breath. She thought repeatedly of making the journey in her stocking feet but had seen several scorpions roaming the campsite, and feared meeting an untimely end from a chance encounter.

Out of the darkness, the vast moonlit majesty of the ancient pyramid loomed.
