Not bullet holes in the background, but a metallic backdrop suggestive of her character. I am working on a full outfit for her, plus I have sketched out her background a little more.

The brightness seems good on my monitor, I can see both the texture of her clothes and the details in her hair.
As far as the overall gamut of light to dark, again it seems OK. The shadows under her collar seem acceptably dark, and the lightest tones in her face and the background are quite bright. I don't see any banding or other issues.

I don't recall seeing many stories or comics with Nicole Greene in them, but I've always thought she was one of the more interesting characters in your gallery. What can I say, the black hair? It's hard to comment on the brightness, as I don't know what kind of result your were going for. It looks good though. The lower part of the picture is fairly dark, but the face seems fine to me.

Thanks, that's really useful. The coat she is wearing was just too dark anyway, on any screen I think.

Brightness seems fine here on my laptop, which is LED backlit and fairly bright. I'd predict that at work, on a CCFL backlit monitor some detail might be lost in the dark areas; and probably more again on a CRT. You can't please all the people all the time, unfortunately.

Cheers. I have an LED backlit monitor which is so bright it burns my retinas working in windows at times so, as a result, I have had to lower the contrast and brightness to a bearable level. Compared to my old LCD the blacks are much deeper too, so the result is that much of my old artwork seems dim and a lot of my scenes and studios in Daz seem very dark too, so I have a feeling that I will be cranking out brighter artwork from now. It's good to see that no-one has complained of it being too bright yet.
I wonder, when you look at the recent Young Amanda shots and the 300k pageviews picture, do they seem too dark to you?

Torqual3D In reply to PoserGirlsInTrouble [2014-03-15 19:15:06 +0000 UTC]
Not really, as due to the position of her hand, it looks like she's resting it on the bar.
By the way, I have just increased my brightness a little and your pictures still overall seem quite dark. This is even accounting for the minimal light sets where you are wanting large dark areas for the scary factor.
I have a theory that you're running an LCD with quite low contrast, rather like the one I have just stopped using. The effect is to make areas that are black for high contrast screens seem OK and graded on yours.
I am still not sure about any of this, by the way. I think I may create a test image soon for calibrating, and ask people to vote on it.

I used to have an online monitor test site in my bookmarks, but it seems to have disappeared; but there are plenty of others out there. This one: www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ was the top result in my Google search and seems reasonable. Running through this on my current screen suggests that my gamma isn't correct, but since it's a laptop I don't have the option to do much about it.
Thanks for the feedback on my image; I'll continue that in my gallery, with your indulgence, so as not to derail yours.

Yeah I had a look at that one but, increasingly, I'm thinking the best way to calibrate is just to look through the pictures in my favourites and try to find the right average.

I don't think I'm qualified to offer a critique, but I'd still ike to share my thoughts! ^__^ One thing that is supremely consistent with your art is the high quality of it - maybe you're pouring every ounce of your artistic energies into every piece or maybe it's just all by the seat of your pants... but whatever it is, it pays off! Your renders are always so beautiful that I'm just glad to look at them, regardless of what they're doing. But to give credit to the body of your work, you ARE very good at what you do. ; D
Also, it's a personal bias, but I always judge CG art a little harsher than traditional art. Maybe because the work of others plays into it, via the models and what not... but seeing work like yours has shown me there is a DISTINCT skill level involved and I was wrong. If anything, it might be that CG art is a little more challenging than traditional art because it requires such finesse and a directorial mind to make it something special.
With all that said: She sure is pretty! XD

Of course you're qualified to offer a critique - you're a great artist.
There are some pieces where I have 'poured every ounce' into (like the TFW images, some of them took over 20 hours) and others like this one that took about ten minutes with post work. I am sure that you understand that you can either spend hour after hour trying to get something 100% and sometimes you just luck out in your doodling and get something looking 90% decent after just a few minutes. A decision I made at the turn of the year was that I would allow myself to upload such pictures without feeling everything had to be a back-breaker.
Thanks for your comment on the quality - I used a very standard lighting and render setup here and the hard work was on Nicole herself. I have just made a few minor changes around the eyes and cheekbones and some pretty solid upgrades to the eye surfaces as well. Now it doesn't take much effort to make her look great.

The brightness is about perfect on my monitor. A very nice character as well. No "overblown" proportions. attractive but real. I would consider this work a success.

Ha, the irony of that is that I am working on a couple of alternatives for her new outfit and they, um, are both turtlenecks. Actually this is very useful feedback from you. I need to vary my style. I just really like turtlenecks though. Gonna have a think about this.
