Castel Thun is the most sumptuous manor house in Trentino, inhabited until 1982 by the powerful Thun family (originally de Tono), which branched out across the Habsburg Empire as far as Bohemia. It began as a simple tower, then grew with the power of the counts, who ended up acquiring most of the castles in the valley. The family gave several prince bishops and commanders since the time of Friedrich Hohenstaufen (alias Rotbart). Now it is a public property, which retains all the furnishings of the counts.

As you pass by the castle, you can see a swamp called 'Ladies' Lake', which many years ago was covered by the waters of a small lake. Here lived a beautiful princess who had been transformed by a spell into a siren with a sweet voice. The mermaid came to the shore every night singing sad songs. One day, the prince of the castle went for a walk and was suddenly attracted by the sad song. Intrigued, he went to the lake to listen to it, hiding in the bushes. One evening he tried to get closer so that he could get a better look at her, but soon the frightened mermaid slipped into the lake. The young prince tried to chase her and was swallowed up by the waters of the swamp. From that day on, the princess disappeared and no one ever heard her voice or her sad songs again. For many years it was said that the algae in the lake were the hair of the princess. Little by little the waters dried up and gave way to the swamp.
